Hi dttravel,
Thanks for posting here! There are many, many places to stop and have lunch. One of the options is hotel Seehof at the lake in Walenstadt, about 1.5 hours from Lucerne. Another option is Chur, a larger town, and the oldest town in Switzerland. Plenty of restaurants there. And then there’s the little restaurant Landhus in the tiny village of Almens (closed on Monday and Tuesday) with their own cheese cellar.
I assume they are doing this in Summer? If not, passes may be closed and the train is a better option. If they’re not used to driving in the mountains, these tips come in handy.
Zermatt is at the end of a valley so somewhat isolated. Day trips in the immediate surroundings make sense, and it can all be done by cable car and train. Cars are not allowed into Zermatt. A guide is not necessary, it’s easy to get around. Day trip suggestions and more info can be found on the Zermatt page.
Are you planning on getting them rail passes? That saves money on the Glacier Express ride and on the cable cars too.

Arno and dttravel —
We stayed at the Seehof a year ago, when we visited Bad Ragaz, Altes Bad Pfäfers, and the Taminaschlucht.
The room was very comfortable, well furnished, and we would stay again. The dinner was very good. The breakfast buffet was extraordinary.
