Fall/Winter season closures in Switzerland?

Short summary – read this first

Lauren and her mother are excited for their first trip to Switzerland from October 27th to November 3rd. They plan to travel from Zurich to Tirano on the Bernina Express, then to Lugano, Montreux, and on to Luzern and Interlaken, but are unsure about the availability of transportation options during this time. They need advice on what might be closed or unavailable as their travel dates fall right before winter schedules begin.

Key takeaways:
  • Check specific mountain and boat service schedules online, as some may close for maintenance in late October.
  • Many mountain attractions close around October 20-25, but options might still be available during your travel dates.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can offer flexibility for trains and transportation, so consider purchasing it for easier travel.

My mother and I are planning our first trip to Switzerland from Saturday, October 27th to Saturday Nov 3rd. Starting off in Zurich, we were hoping to take the Bernina Express down to Tirano then onto Lugano by bus. After spending a night in in Lugano we were planning to continue on to Montreux (one or two nights) then through Luzern and Interlakin perhaps via The Golden Pass Line. I’ve been browsing through this site which has been very helpful. At some point I came across the seasonal dates: Winter Dec 11- May 12, Summer May 13 – October 29th. Yikes! This completely misses off our week! I know the last day for the Tirano- Lugano bus is Oct 28th, but what about other things? Cable cars? Cog trains? boats? Are things shutting down for maintenance during this time?

We are just about to book our flights but am hesitant to do so if too many things will be unavailable.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Lauren

Hi Lauren G and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Some mountains are open year-round and other close for the winter or close for 2-6 weeks in the fall or spring.

Do you have plans to visit certain mountains? What we have listed here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities/naturalsites click the mountain or boat trip you are interested in and then click on the “route” tab for any closure details we have.

Here is Mt. Pilatus for example: http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus/gettingthere

You’ll find most mountains (if they close) it is around the 20-25th of October at the earliest. So if you can even move your trip back a week you’ll have no problems. Although I still think you’ll find enough on your current dates if you can’t move them.

Thank you for your quick reply. It is impossible to move the week as I only have one week off from school (I’m a teacher). My mother is in her seventies so we weren’t looking for hiking but she loves nature and spectacular scenery and she loves taking different “rides” on a variety of transportation – trains, cable cars, boats, etc. I’ll check out the link you sent!

    Thanks again.
