Accommodation in Engelberg has no wifi

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is going to Engelberg for 3 days and is concerned about the lack of wifi at their accommodation. They are looking for places with free public wifi to avoid buying a sim card.

Key takeaways:
  • Check local cafes and the tourist office for free wifi access.
  • Free wifi is available at around 80 train stations, but unfortunately not in Engelberg.
  • Consider renting a wifi hotspot or buying a data SIM for better internet access during your stay.
  • If you're okay with fast food, McDonald's is a reliable spot for free wifi.

Hi. I will be going to Engelberg and staying at accommodation with no wifi. I am there for only 3 days and am reluctant to buy a sim card. Are there any places with access to free public wifi? Thanks.

    Hi Weilee,

No wifi? That’s one of the few places left probably! Personally I’d buy a SIM card or rent a wifi hotspot, because internet is quite handy for your day trip planning: http://www.myswissalps.com/si mcard. If you’d rather do without, then you can use free wifi at 80 train stations, not including Engelberg unfortunately: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/internet. Also I found this, but I don’t know how accurate it is: http://www.engelberg.ch/en/fr ee-wifi-access-in-engelberg/free-wifi-access-in-engelberg/.

For the best value data SIM you can’t go past shop.salt.ch/en/plans/ prepay/

The actual offer may be hidden behind a 50% discount pop up which you have to dismiss to see the real deal. Hit the “X” at top right hand corner of the pop up.

It is not officially endorsed by MySwissAlps but I used this SIM when I visited last year and found it great value. We have reports of another member sending weather reports to the forum from the top of Schilthorn using that SIM.

CHF19.95 (when I used this SIM in 2017 it was only CHF10 but still great value) gets you 10 days unlimited high-speed data (assuming you use it only for data and not calls as well).

Depends how much you need/want internet access.

Ok thanks. I was hoping perhaps some cafes or the local tourist office may have wifi available .

    <<“the local tourist office”>>

    Quite common. Worth asking.

    Slowpoke.

Macdonalds (if there is one) as a last resort. 😉
