First class Swiss Travel Pass but no reservation?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named tropicool123 is disappointed about purchasing first class Swiss Travel Passes for six without guaranteed seat reservations on panoramic trains. They are frustrated that availability seems limited to tour groups and are seeking advice on how to navigate this issue. After struggling to reserve seats, they'll focus on enjoying first class on regular trains instead.

Key takeaways:
  • When using the Swiss Travel Pass, remember that seat reservations for panoramic trains are necessary and can sell out quickly.
  • Even if you can't secure panoramic train seats, first class options on regular trains offer a comfortable alternative for travel in Switzerland.

If I purchase first class STP’s for six, but seat reservations are not available on panoramic trains, what is the use of purchase? I believe seat reservations should be guaranteed for paying for first class, or at least given priority. If seat reservations can be taken up by Tour Groups, individuals would have almost no chance!! So disappointing!!

    Hi tropicool123,

With a 1st Class Swiss Travel Pass, you can travel in the 1st class carriages on any Swiss public transport. This includes panoramic trains such as the Bernina Express and Glacier Express. However, just like 2nd class seats, 1st class seats on the panoramic trains need to be reserved in advance and yes, unfortunately they do sell out. As an alternative you can still travel on the regular trains, in 1st class of course.

    Regards,

    Anna

I’m afraid it is nobody’s fault that system works the way it does. The Glacier Express as it runs now is a victim of overhyped marketing, and the influx of tourists flying in in huge numbers from all over the world – all wanting to have the same ‘experience’, which didn’t happen when the Glacier Express was invented in the 1930s.

<removed by moderator>, and that is that the Glacier Express is not the be all and end all of travel in the Swiss alps . There are dozens of ways to see the mountains in Switzerland without using the Glacier Express. Also remember that you see few if any glaciers from the Glacier Express

Thanks for all replies. I purchased my swiss passes today and tried to reserve 6 seats on Glacier as well as Bernina Express, and had no luck, except one that operares during late hours. I even tried reversing my journey, but no luck.

So, as mentioned above, we will be happy by travelling first class in local trains, and keeping our origial itinerary.
