First time skiing in Switzerland early November

Short summary – read this first

Chrishua is planning a ski trip in early November with her husband and 12-year-old daughter, both beginners. She is looking for advice on where to ski, what to expect for lessons, availability of rental gear, costs, and language spoken by instructors. Zermatt is recommended as a good option for guaranteed snow and English-speaking instructors.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider going to Zermatt for your first skiing experience, as it has reliable snow in November.
  • Look for ski schools that offer group lessons or private instruction; prices are around CHF300 per person for three days of lessons.
  • Rental gear like ski boots and helmets is usually included, but bring your own gloves and jackets; these can be purchased if needed.

Hi all, I’m coming from a tropical country and have never skiied before. I am exploring the possibility of trying it for the first time with my husband and daughter of 12 who also have never skiied before. Can i please ask for advise on

    1) where wld be the best place to experience it for the first time (i’m travelling early nov, i understand some places are closed and there might not be snow) and what we can expect from there? (Like will there be classes to take or can we do sleights (is it the correct term?)? Will the gears like shoes, gloves etc be provided on rental or for purchase?

    2) How much can we be expected to pay for the experience and how long wld it usually be?

    3) Do the operators usually speak English?

    4) Any other things we need to look out for?

Thank you all for the kind advises, no matter how much it might be.

    Hi Chrishua,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The ski season in Switzerland typically starts in mid-December. You have limited options if you want to ski in November. I would recommend going to Zermatt where snow is guaranteed almost all year round. There are several ski schools in town and most of the ski instructors speak English. You can join a group lesson or hire a private instructor for one-to-one lesson. The prices vary. For adults it’s usually around CHF300 per person for a 3 day lesson (2-3 hours per day). The prices usually include rental of ski equipment (ski boots, skis, poles, helmets). In most cases you will have to bring your own gloves, jackets and ski trousers. These can also be purchased from the shop.

    Hope this gets you started.
