Switzerland in February: avoid snow, bad weather

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning their first trip to Switzerland in February, focusing on enjoying the scenery with their 3-year-old. They are considering Interlaken or Lucerne as their base and want to know about the weather and whether to rent a car or use public transport for exploring nearby areas.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect fog in both Lucerne and Interlaken during February; consider exploring lower-elevation areas like Gruyères and Montreux for more greenery.
  • Using public transport is highly recommended for easy travel; it's efficient and comfortable.
  • Check for storage lockers at train stations for convenient luggage handling during your outings.

    Hi!

My husband and I (and our 3 year old) are planning on visiting Switzerland in Feb. This would be our first visit and I have a couple of questions. We mostly want to enjoy the scenery! we are considering Interlaken or Lucerne as our base. How is the overall weather? It has been said that there can be quite a lot of fog in Luceren. So what would you suggest considering we want to see more “green” than snow, preferably in small towns, villages etc rather than staying in a big city.

To see the areas around Lucerne or Interlaken, what is better renting a car or using public transport?

    Thanks!

Hello Arvj arvj, and welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, places near lakes could be foggy, so that’s both Interlaken and Lucerne. Otherwise, difficult to predict the weather. I assume you don’t ski, but how long do you plan to stay? What comes up to my mind would be Gruyères, a very scenic village with a medieval castle, green fields (if there is no snow, that is), and, by good weather, view on peaks and possibilities for sightseeing.

Use public transport and relax. Plenty of information on this site about public transport. There are lockers in most train stations, all the large ones, where you can put your luggage in storage if you need to.

hi Arvj arvj and welcome to MySwissAlps!

February isn’t the best time to avoid snow and see much greenery in Switzerland, but if you stick to lower elevations you’ll at least avoid some snow (but Lucerne and Interlaken can get snow in February for sure!) http://www.myswissalps.com/be sttimetovisit

I’d agree with Snowman and look at Southwest Switzerland (Gruyeres, Montreux etc) http://www.myswissalps.com/so uthwestswitzerland

Ticino probably won’t have any snow to deal with (when not on any mountain tops) either and would be a good choice: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti cino

In almost all cases, we think traveling by train in Switzerland is best. Read more about that here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain // http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain

    Thankyou so much for replying

@snowman yes you guessed right, we dont ski and we plan to stay for about 5 nights. Gruyères sounds interesting, will definitely look into it. If you have any other advice/suggestion I’d love to hear it 🙂

@Lucas yeah thats what I thought but its not that we want to avoid snow altogether, just that we would like to see some greenery too. You know like the Switzerland that I have seen in movies (sorry that probably sounded ridiculous lol!)

Good to know about the train. Thanks again for all the info. If there is anything else please do let me know 🙂

    Cheers
