Flying out option – Zurich vs Geneva

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 6-day trip in September, spending 2 days in Lucerne, 3 days in Interlaken, and their final day either in Zurich or Geneva. They are looking for advice on whether to take a scenic route back via Zurich, visiting Rhine Falls and Lake Zurich, or through Geneva, exploring Montreux and the Golden Pass Express.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the Golden Pass Express for a more scenic experience through Montreux and Lake Geneva.
  • If you travel with heavy luggage, consider arranging luggage delivery to the airport for convenience.
  • Geneva Airport is smaller and easier to navigate than Zurich Airport, which may be a factor in your decision.

I have the option to fly out of Zurich or Geneva on my way back from a 6 day trip (2 days in Lucerne, 3 days in Interlaken, final day in Zurich or Geneva) in Sep. If I go back via Zurich, I plan to visit Rhine Falls, Lake Zurich, Lindt Chocolate Tour and Old Town. If I go via Geneva, I plan to take the Golden Pass Express to Montreux, spend time exploring Montreux (Chillon Castle, Lake Geneva) followed by another train to Geneva for dinner/overnight stay, for next day flight. Please advise which of the two would be better. I believe the main difference is between Rhine Falls vs Golden Pass Express – which of these would be a better experience? Thanks

    Hi toofan,

I love scenic train rides so I would opt for the Golden Pass and exploring Montreux before flying out of Geneva.

Having said that I find flying out of Zurich Airport is much more convenient.

    Regards,

    Anna

Thanks Anna. Since this is the return travel to airport, I’ll be carrying the luggage with me. I understand that with Golden Pass, I’ll need to change the train twice between Interlaken and Montreux – I’m a bit concerned about moving luggage (2 large 25 kg bags) multiple times, and then storing it in Montreux train station while we explore the city

    Hi toofan,

If you’re concerned about travelling with heavy luggage on the train, you can arrange to have one or both luggage delivered to the airports in advance. You can find details on how to do this here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

I would go via the Golden Pass and Lake Geneva – overall more scenic – much higher mountains overlook Lake Geneva. Rhine Falls is a quite small falls in world terms. I personally don’t think the Lindt chocolate visit is much to write home about (Lindt chocolate is mainly made in the French Pyrenees, 1000km from Zurich…)

Geneva itself is under-rated on this site but the lake front is extremely pleasant

Geneva is a much smaller airport than Zurich so much easier to navigate.
