I forgot to ask in my earlier post… Sorry!

can you advise me where is a good place( not fancy) to enjoy fondue mid- May in the Bernese Oberland area? And do they take reservations?

Also, is there a locale that we might visit to hear/ see Alphorns or yodeling during May 11- 24? We’ll be in Lucerne, on to Locarno, to Chur, back to Bernese Oberland. Thank you very much.

Fondue, Alpenhorns and yodelling are Swiss stereotypes, personally I would avoid all three.

That was actually helpful as if it’s just touristy, I don’t want to partake. Thank you.

    Hello 1960man and Galvgirl,

I just read your recent post entitled “Fondue, Alpenhorn and Yodeling”.

Well, I’m not interested in those 3 things, but I would like to know if there is a Folklore Show (not sure how to correctly label this show). Perhaps a Lunch or Dinner Show with (old fashioned) Swiss dancing, singing, music, which I love. I know… touristy , but I love them.

I’m staying in Wengen mid-September for 2 weeks.

    Thanks a lot. Jers

    Hi Galygirl,

If you’re interested in experiencing a bit of Swiss culture, perhaps a good place to visit is the Ballenberg Open Air Museum. Occasionally the museum organises special themed exhibits, events and courses on Swiss customs and cultures.

You can find further culture-themed and culinary-related tours here: http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/culture

    regards,

    Hi Galvgirl and Jers!

Personally, I’ve been touched several times by Alphorn players or yodelling. It can actually be beautiful, especially up in the mountains. Even though such shows are also performed for tourists nowadays, they’re still fundamental elements of Swiss folklore and tradition, and not only touristy as such.

Alphorn concerts and folklore shows do occur in summer at Schynige Platte and Harder Kulm. The links at the below pages provide more details:

There’s an Alphorn festival at Männlichen on August 6 2023:

Fondue can be eaten in lots of restaurants with Swiss cuisine. You’ll easily find options in nearly each town.

I wouldn’t skip the fondue, good food is good food. We had it once during a ski trip to Grindelwald but that was so long ago I can’t remember the name of the restaurant where we ate. However, if you happen to be in Luzern any time, I recommend the Restaurant Fritchi in Old Town.

Thank you all for the information ! I am so looking forward to the visit to Switzerland as its been on my bucket list forever. If I decide to do Harder Klum and eat at the restaurant are reservations necessary?

    Hi Galygirl,

Reservation is recommended if you’re visiting during lunch or with a group of people. Sometimes the restaurant can be very busy and crowded especially in good weather.

    regards,

    Anna
