Footware for visiting Switzerland in December 2019

Short summary – read this first

Veena is planning a trip to Switzerland from December 23 to 28 and is looking for advice on what kind of shoes to buy for winter weather. She's particularly interested in ice grips to prevent slipping and wants to know where to find them in Switzerland.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy warm and solid footwear for the mountains, and lighter shoes for the cities.
  • Consider getting ice grips for extra traction on slippery surfaces.
  • Look into purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass for easy travel to mountain areas.

Hi I will be in Switzerland from 23 to 28 December 2019. I would like to know which kind of shoes I should buy.

I have also heard that ice grips could be inserted in the sole in order to prevent from slipping. I would like to know where I can buy ice grips/studs in Switzerland.

    Hello Veena,

Nice to hear you’ll be spending Christmas in Switzerland!

It is winter time in December, although currently the temperatures are not too low (at least for a Swiss!)

In the mountains you will definitely have snow and want to ware warm, solid footware, whereas in the cities you will be fine with a little less. You don’t say what your plans are.

In any case, get more input on the topic in these forum threads:
