From Milan central railway station to Zermatt

Short summary – read this first

Yap from Singapore is planning a trip to Switzerland with his wife, traveling from Milan to Zermatt via Brig in late May. He seeks advice on ticket purchasing, validation of the Swiss Travel Pass, and whether to use the scenic Glacier Express or regular trains for their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy a ticket from Milan to Domodossola and then continue to Brig on the same train, showing your Swiss Travel Pass when asked.
  • No validation is needed for the Swiss Travel Pass, just print the E-ticket in advance.
  • Reservations are mandatory for the Glacier Express train, but for regular trains from Brig to Zermatt, reservations are not necessary.
  • Make sure to reserve seats for the Italian part of your journey as it's an international trip.

    Hi everyone,

I am Yap from Singapore. My wife and me will be travelling first time to Europe and Switzerland.

We will be travelling from Milan central railway station to Zermatt in late May. We will purchase Swiss travel pass in advance from Klook.com. I have below enquiries:

    1. Shall we buy train ticket from Milan station to Brig only? Then we use our Swiss travel pass to travel from Brig to Zermatt. Or is there any other way ?

    2. At Brig, that will be our first time using Swiss Travel Pass. We will print out our E-ticket in advance. May I know how to validate the ticket at Brig?

    3. To travel to Zermatt by scenic train glazier express at Brig, are we going to pay more even with my Swiss travel pass. Do I need to make reservation and how to do that?

    4. Is there any other things I need to take note?

    Thanks for helping.

    Best regards.

    Yap CK

    Hi Yap,

    1. Milan to Domodossola only (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy) then use the Swiss Travel Pass on-wards to Brig and Zermatt.
    2. No need to validate: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/howtouse
    3. Yes, you pay for a reservation on the Glacier Express train which is mandatory for everyone no matter the rail pass you have. See here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/packages
    4. Should be it! 🙂

Spending extra money on the Glacier (not Glazier) Express for Brig– Zermatt only is pointless. Just use the regular trains which you can ‘walk on’ if you have a Swiss Travel Pass.

The regular trains Brig – Zermatt are nowadays formed of recently built trains with large windows so there is no benefit to using the Glacier Express

    Thank for helping.

I need to clarify on below:

1.i shall purchase train ticket from Milan to Domodossola. When reach Domodossola, I shall carry on the same train to Brig? When do I need to show my Swiss travel pass?

    2. Or do I need to switch train at Domodossola?

By the way, is it recommendable to reserve train seat in advance from Milan to Domodossola? I am concern there might be no seat avaable on the day of my travel.
    Thanks.

    1. Stay on the same train. You show your Swiss Travel Pass when asked to do so by a train inspector. Make sure oyu also have your passport handy for identification.

    2. No.

Yes – you must reserve seats on the Italian part of the journey at least.

The best trains to use are the Eurocity (EC) trans Milano Centrale to Basel or Geneva. You must reserve on these trains as it is an international journey as far as Brig.

At Brig you walk out of the front of the station to find the MGB Zermatt line station which is in the main street.

    Thanks!

I tried to book the train ticket at trenitalia. When I key in from Milan Centrale to Domodossola on my specific date and time, several regional train (i.e R#2150 etc) schedule were shown only.

However, when I key in from Milan Centrale to Brig at the same specific date and time, several Eurocity train (i.e EC#36 etc) schedule were shown only. No above regional trains were shown.

The time schedule and train type are different when I key in different destination (Domodossola & Brig) on the same date and time. I am now confused. Shall I reserve my ticket to Domodossola or Brig at trenitalia.

Please feel free to clarify with me. Thanks a lot!!

    Hi all,

Please ignore my previous message. I have booked eurocity rail from Milano Centrale To Domodossola, which will further proceed to Brig. I have below concern:

At Domodossola, since we do not alight and stay in the same train to Brig, will my seat be taken my those who have booked and aboard the train at Domodossola? Do I need to reserve just to ensure we have seat to Brig?

WE will reach Brig at 1930 evening. Is there still have train to Zermatt and do I need to reserve in advance?

I apologise for all the inconvenience caused. Best Regards.

    Hi Yap

Yes, you do have connections from Brig to Zermatt after 19.30. There are three more direct trains.

    See http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable for details.

Seat reservations aren’t necessary in Switzerland but if you can reserve a seat right through to Brig that would be wise. Use this link for helpful input: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/reservations

And the forum is here to clarify things, so don’t worry.

    Kind regards and happy travelling.

    Hey Yap,

Domodossola to Brig is considered Switzerland and as Steph says, no reservations required. That leg is only 30 minutes and it’s quite common for people to have a ticket for the Italian part of their trip (with reservation) and then continue on their Swiss Travel Pass. There won’t be that many people boarding the train in Domodossola.

If you are on EC36 you will arrive Brig at 19.16 not 19.30, but it makes no difference in the evening as the first available train to Zermatt after that is at 19.52 from Brig.

There is no need to worry; the validity area of the Swiss Travel Pass starts at Domodossola, as the railway through the tunnel to Brig is operated by the Swiss.
