Short summary – read this first

Key takeaways:
  • Start your day early to fit in all activities.
  • Book your Gelmerbahn tickets in advance to secure your spot.

    Hello!

We have 1 full day in interlaken and wanted to do gelmerbahn in the morning, rothornbahn after and then brienz lake cruise going back to interlaken. Is this too ambitious for one day? We’re not hiking, btw just wanted to experience the different trains and the mountain views.

    Thankyou!

    Hi Dangeli,

yes, I think you can do that if you start early. Make sure to book your place for the Gelmerbahn in advance. I missed it 2 times so far. 🙁

Are you going to have a rail pass? If you stay at least a few days and you plan to travel a lot (mountain trips included) you can save money with a pass. Here is how to choose a pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

If you tell us more about your itinerary we can help you too regarding the passes.

    Take care,

    It will be tight.

The Gelmerbahn takes some time to reach and get back from, then:

Beware that if you do the Rothorn in the afternoon, you need to leave the summit by 15.28 at the latest to connect into the last boat of the day on Brienzersee

We’re going around switzerland for 17 days!

lucerne, zermatt, montruex, interlaken, grindelwald, adelboden and the zuirich so we’re going to purchase the swiss travel pass 🙂 hopefully it will be worth it since it’s quite expensive ☺️

If we give up the cruise do you think we can enjoy it? 🙂 how many hours do people usually stay in gelmersee and rothorn kulm? We’re not planning on hiking 🙂

    Hi Dangeli,

I am sure, you’ll see many wonderful things during those 17 days! If you need a rail pass for longer than 15 days, have a look at this one: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/details.

In case you skip the boat ride, you can stay longer up Brienzer Rothorn. The last train leaves Rothorn at 17:40.

If you are in Switzerland for 17 days I’m sure you will get to do a lake boat trip at some stage!

The Brienzersee is quite small, so I think you can skip the lake boat in this instance, because you can see most of the lake from the train, and indeed from the Brienzer Rothorn
