Geneva – Montreux: Scenic views and train types?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named PalB09 is planning a train trip from Geneva to Montreux and wants to know about the views along the way and which train type to choose (RE, IR, or IC). They've learned that while the route isn’t specifically panoramic, they can expect lovely views of Lake Geneva and the vineyards, regardless of the train selected.

Key takeaways:
  • All train types (RE, IR, IC) between Geneva and Montreux offer the same scenic views; the main difference is in the number of stops.
  • For the best views of Lake Geneva, sit on the right side of the train during the ride from Lausanne to Montreux.
  • Consider checking the electronic Swiss timetable for a clearer overview of all train services on that line.

    Hi PalB09,

Yes, for sure you will be able to enjoy some lovely views whilst traveling between Geneva and Montreux. That’s right between Lausanne and Montreux, you’ll view the vineyards down to the lake. Of course the views of Lake Geneva itself will be stunning 🙂

I don’t think it will matter which train you take unless you are specifically wanting to hop off at some point, then you would need to plan accordingly and then that would dictate the train type you will be traveling on.

As you have probably discovered, you can see the stops by clicking on the route via the timetable.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you for your response, Yolanda! So basically (if I understand correctly) all trains (RE, IR, IC) follow the same route and offer the same views. The only difference is in the number of stops.

Lausanne – Montreux is like any other European main line railway route – a single route used by all types of train (all stations stoppers, semi fast regional trains, express inter regional trains, freight trains etc.

One drawback of modern computer Journey planner type transport timetables is that they do not give you an overview of all services on one line. However, there is an electronic Swiss timetable with each line shown in PDF.

    Lausanne – Montreux is here:

    http://www.xn--v-info-vxa.ch/sites/default/files/fap/2023/pdf/100.pdf

Geneve – Lausanne is a fast straight railway – mostly away from the lake shore. Lausanne – Montreux is the complete opposite, the railway hugs the lake shore. Sit on the right hand side for the best lake views. Many trains (of all categories) on the line are now double deck which helps to give even better views from the upper deck.

No problem. Despite being based in the UK, my first journey Geneve – Montreux was 62 years ago, my most recent journey on the same line was a month ago – and the lake shore still looks the same!
