Geneva to Lauterbrunnen by train – options?

Short summary – read this first

A family of four is planning a 9-day trip to Switzerland and needs help with traveling from Geneva to Lauterbrunnen via the Golden Pass route. They also want to know if they can buy the Swiss Travel Pass upon arriving in Geneva.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the Swiss Timetable to find train connections from Geneva to Lauterbrunnen and include Montreux and Zweisimmen as via stations for the Golden Pass route.
  • It’s better to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass online before arriving to save time, but you can buy it at the airport or train station.
  • If your children are aged 6-15, order a free Family Card so they can travel free, as kids under 6 already travel for free.

You can find out the route, connections and departure times for trains from Geneva to Lauterbrunnen via the Golden Pass route by using the Swiss Timetable.

Please make sure you use the correct spelling for Lauterbrunnen, otherwise the timetable might not work properly.

In order to get the Golden Pass route to display, you will need to put in “Montreux” and “Zweisimmen” as “via” stations, otherwise the timetable will only display the fastest route via Bern.

Yes, but you will save time if you buy it online and print it at home, and you will also be able to print another copy if the original should get lost or damaged. If your children are aged between 6 and 15, make sure to order the free Family Card as well, so that they can travel free. Children under the age of 6 travel free without any extra card or ticket.

    Hi Harrysimi,

Also note when reading the timetable (link from Alpenrose) the panoramic trains on the Golden Pass route run only between Montreux and Zweisimmen and are noted on the schedule as MOB panoramic (modern trains) and MOB Belle Epoque (heritage trains) so you want to be on one of those trains for the panoramic experience.

    Cheers!

    Lucas
