Getting to Italy from Zermatt via cable car?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Ouseler is curious about taking a cable car from Zermatt across the mountains into Italy. They are seeking advice on whether this route is possible, particularly for a scenic experience. The discussion focuses mainly on skiing options and future plans for a cableway.

Key takeaways:
  • You can only ski from Switzerland into Italy at Zermatt; there aren’t currently any cables for non-skiing travelers across the border.
  • Look into the upcoming 'Alpine Crossing' project, which might offer a cableway from Klein Matterhorn to Testa Griglia in the future.
  • Consider that some users mention using a chair lift to reach the border for skiing only, and non-skiing options are limited right now.

    Hi Ouseler-

Never tried. Here is a map to look at until someone knowledgeable replies:

Sure looks like it, although the lift on the Swiss side in this image is a chairlift ( die Sesselbahn)>

When do you want to do it?

You can certainly ski from Switzerland to Italy outside of Zermatt. I guess some series of ski lifts would get you over the border. http://www.dallasnews.com/lif e/travel/2015/02/27/sk i-from-switzerland-to-italy-and-back-again

    No it isn’t.

You can get a chair lift to the summit on the border but you can only ski into the other country.

    I’ve done this many times

    Hi everyone,

This will probably be possible in the future. The project “Alpine Crossing” aims to build a cableway from Klein Matterhorn to Testa Griglia on the border, where you can connect to the Italian cable car system.

By which time there will be more steel/glass/concrete paraphernalia than mountain at Klein Matterhorn – not terribly environmentally friendly…
