St Moritz to Zermatt – alternative to the Glacier Express train

Short summary – read this first

Queenie is planning a trip from Zermatt to St. Moritz and is concerned about securing a seat on the Glacier Express for October 2nd. In case she cannot book the Glacier Express, she seeks alternative travel options. Luckily, she successfully managed to get a seat after some effort and is feeling relieved and excited about her trip.

Key takeaways:
  • If you can't book the Glacier Express, you can travel on regional trains, but be prepared for multiple train changes.
  • Consider skipping the section from Rheichenau-Tamins to Chur for a quicker trip, as it isn't the most scenic part.
  • Keep an eye on booking times and refresh often, as seats can sell out quickly.

    Hi Queenie,

You can either travel the Glacier Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/glacier-express/) route on regional trains, or take a different route via Zürich.

From an earlier post, I gather this trip will be on 2 October. If you do in fact fail to get a Glacier Express reservation for that day, please post again to tell us that. Then we can guide you more precisely on how to plan the trip from Zermatt to St Moritz on regional trains.

There will be several changes along the way, and you can choose whether to travel the exact Glacier Express route, via Chur, or to omit the sector from Rheichenau-Tamins to Chur. The Rheichenau-Tamins to Chur stretch is not one of the most scenic sectors, and the trip on regional trains works better timewise if you skip it. I have attached a map with a red arrow showing the location of Reichenau-Tamins.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Queenie,

You can travel with regional trains from St Moritz to Zermatt on the Glacier Express route. However you would need to change trains several times. You can information on how to plan a trip on the Glacier Express route with regional trains here:

Also see the section “Glacier Express trains versus normal trains” on that same page.

Thank you both so much for that reassurance. Fingers crossed that I won’t need to research that option.

Yeaaaah!   I made it…. I managed ….at 2am… to obtain a single seat on the GEX.

I sat at my computer for 2hrs from 12mn refreshing every 5 minutes until reservations opened.   I am so thrilled to have scored a single seat and even more thrilled that the transaction went through with no problems.
Thanks so much for all your valuable advice and support.  You are all amazing!

Queenie, I am so pleased that you got your seat.  I now how stressed you were about the whole thing.

Now you can sit back and relax and wait for the great day, apart from praying for better weather than there is now of course!
