Glacier Express – booking seat reservation only

Short summary – read this first

A traveler shared their May travel plans, expressing concern about their Glacier Express reservation from Zermatt to St. Moritz. They selected 'Reservation only' during booking and are unsure if they need to buy separate tickets, despite planning to use the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • If you select 'Reservation only', you need a valid ticket or pass like the Swiss Travel Pass for travel.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, you don't need to buy an additional ticket for Glacier Express; just show your pass and seat confirmation when requested.
  • Seat reservations and journey tickets are separate; you can use various tickets, including rail passes, until your travel date.

    Hello,

My travel plan is in the month of May 2023. I’ve already reserved the seats at Glacier express (Zermatt to St.Moritz). While booking the reservation I selected “Reservation only” within the reduction section. In future I plan to buy Swiss travel pass during our stay at Switzerland. Wondering if my selection of reduction will be entertained considering i chose reservation only but traveling on Swiss travel pass. Am I going to be asked to purchase tickets separately for Glacier express due to wrong selection of reduction option.

    Thanks,

    Hi Jdlahiri,

No worries. Selecting Reservation Only means your booking comprise only a confirmed seat on the Glacier Express and no tickets. What you need next is a valid ticket or a railpass such as the Swiss Travel Pass. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, there is no need to purchase a ticket. You simply board the train and present the pass + seat confirmation when requested.

    Best regards,

    Hi,

You did the correct procedure, Seat Reservation & Journey Ticket are two separate bookings, You can use STP or other pass or Valid ticket any time till the travel date, your seat is assured.

You need to shiw only the Valid Journey ticket or pass to Ticket checker.

Good Afternoon folks. An excellent thread. We want to travel from St Moritz to Zermatt on Tuesday 5th September 2023.

I am told that I can reserve 1st class seats 3 months ahead of that date, but cannot buy the tickets until 2 months in advance.

We will use a 4 day flex pass and I assume this will represent the tickets? Is there any advantage in going from St Moritz to Zermatt

    or vice versa?

Many thanks for your advice in advance.

    Hi doctorlol,

That’s right you can book seats on the Glacier Express even without a valid ticket.

You can indeed use the Swiss Travel Pass Flex for free travel on the Glacier Express. Just make sure you activate it for travel on that day. For further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex/howtouse

The choice to travel from St Moritz to Zermatt or the other way around is up to you. Ideally it should be based on timing and your itinerary.

    regards,

    Anna
