Is it recommended to travel on the Glacier Express in July-August?

Short summary – read this first

Hasan is planning to ride the Glacier Express in July or August and wants to know if the views are nice during that time. He also seeks recommendations for beautiful villages to stay in along the route to break up the journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Make your seat reservation for the Glacier Express as soon as possible, especially for summer travel when seats fill up quickly.
  • Consider stopping in Chur or Brig to break your journey and enjoy additional beautiful scenery.
  • Invest in a Swiss Travel Pass for easy access to the Swiss public transport system; it allows you to hop on and off regular trains without compulsory reservations.

    Hi Hasan,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

A detail description of the Glacier Express route is available here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/glacier-express/#directions

The views are certainly scenic in summer and you get the added benefit of longer daylight hours. Please note, the seats get booked up really quick so if you are planning to travel in July or August, you will need to be quick and make your seat reservation as soon as possible.

If you’d like to break your journey, I’d recommend stopping in Chur or Brig and continue your journey the next day on the same scenic train or regular train. Please note you will need seat reservation for each trip on the scenic train.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hello Hasan

It appears that you want to ‘hop-off an hop-on’ at ‘some beautiful villages to stay on the route if I want to break up the journey‘.

Provided you invest in a Swiss Travel Pass, ALMOST the whole of the Swiss public transport system, with trains and buses running hourly and no compulsory seat reservation, is ideal if you want to be able hop off, and then hop back on again perhaps a couple of hours later.

However, I did write ‘ALMOST’.   The Glacier  Express, running at most four times a day, and with very expensive compulsory set reservations, is one of the very rare exceptions to this general ‘hop-off hop-on is easy’ rule.   If you are travelling on the LINES used by the Glacier Express, use the regular hourly regional trains, for example the IR38s between St Moritz and Chur.

    Best wishes
    Roger
