Glacier Express line, Andermatt or Disentis/Mustér
A traveler is planning a train day along the Glacier Express line starting from either Visp or Brig in mid-April. They are unsure whether to stop in Andermatt or continue to Disentis/Mustér and are seeking advice on which stop would be better for lunch and exploring. They also want recommendations for scenic hop-off stops along the way.
- Use your Swiss Travel Pass to hop on and off at any station along the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn route for great hiking options.
- Consider stopping at Betten or Fiesch for stunning views of the Aletsch Glacier from Bettmerhorn or Eggishorn.
- If time allows, continue to Oberalp Pass for some of the most beautiful scenery on the Glacier Express route.

Looking at spending a “train day” riding along the Glacier Express line using regional trains (Swiss Travel Pass). The day will begin from either Visp or Brig. Visp has direct service to Andermatt; Brig to Disentis/Muster. Normally Andermatt at just over 2 hours is about the most we would do for a single train ride. Disentis/Mustér is pushing closer to three. But I’m worried ending in Andermatt is a bit anticlimactic since you are in a long tunnel for so long at the end (or so I’ve read). And somewhere I thought I read that the Andermatt to Disentis/Mustér stretch was one of the most beautiful on the line.
Any thoughts on how to play this? Stop in Andermatt? Push ahead to Disentis/Mustér? Is one better than the other for lunch and walking around before returning? This will be mid-April, BTW.
Secondarily, and especially if we only go as far as Andermatt and have more time in the day, any suggested hop-off stops along the way? I’ve read good things about Bettmeralp, as well as Eggishorn. Any other stops along that route that are particularly compelling?
