The Glacier Express seat reservation costs the same whether you start in Zermatt or Brig. But you need a 1st class ticket to ride in 1st class.
Because the Glacier Express departs very early from Zermatt, it’s generally not practical to reach it the same morning if you are starting from from Mürren. In this case, it is more convenient to board in Brig. You’ll need to arrive in Brig in time for the 10:06 or 11:06 Glacier Express departures (based on the summer timetable). The timetable is seasonal, so be sure to confirm the exact times before you travel.
Please note: Traveling from Mürren to Brig takes about 2.5 hours, so plan your morning connection accordingly.

I must admit I was surprised when I read of your intention to go from Murren to St Moritz using the Glacier Express. It takes nearly three hours to get from Murren to Brig, and four changes are required; at Grutschalp, Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken Ost and Spiez.
I generally agree with Anna’s advice, but here is an addition point which may help you
Summer Afternoon Glacier Express Brig to St Moritz
From the 3rd May to 11th October 2026 there is an AFTERNOON Glacier Express which STARTS from Brig at 14 14 and gets to St Moritz at 20 53. This train does not run from Zermatt, so every seat on this train should be available for passengers from Brig.

Thank you for your replies. I should have clarified that we plan to spend the night in Brig before starting on the glacier express the next day. My main concern is whether it will be harder to get first class seats if we board in Brig rather than board in Zermatt. Though it is very helpful to know about the afternoon trip that begins in Brig.

No worries. Reservations for the stretch Brig – St. Moritz are very common, and it won’t be any more challenging to find 1st-class seats than for the entire route from Zermatt.
