Glacier Express upgrade to 1st class with pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Vick91 is planning a trip on the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur but faces a full reservation for 2nd class. They are seeking urgent advice about upgrading to first class, specifically on the cost and whether they can upgrade upon arrival or need to do it in advance.

Key takeaways:
  • You can upgrade from 2nd to 1st class at any staffed train station in Switzerland if you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, paying only half the difference between classes.
  • Class upgrades do not sell out, but seat reservations do, so make sure to secure your reservation first.
  • If the Glacier Express is fully booked, consider taking a regular train on the same route as an alternative.

Upgrade to First Class of Glacier Express using 2nd class swiss pass.

Hi, I am planning to Glacier Express train from Zermatt to Chur (and then change to normal train to Zurich) using Swiss Pass.

Sadly, I find the reservation is full for 2nd class so I have no choice but to upgrade to first class, does anyone know how much is the price to upgrade?

Also, if I were to upgrade, is that necessary to upgrade in advance or I can do that on the spot?

I found this page about the upgrade “for a specific route” but when I clicked purchase, there seems no option for Glacier Express 2nd class to 1st class using swiss pass from Zermatt to Chur.

Urgent advise is appreciated as I am worry the second class reservation is running out (only left 2 seats for couple to sit together).

    Hi Vick91,

Welcome to MySwissAlps and happy 2023! Class upgrades don’t sell out. Only seat reservations can sell out. In this case I recommend to buy the upgrade at a staffed train station in Switzerland. The reason is that Swiss Travel Pass holders only pay half of the difference between 2nd and 1st class. You may pay more if you buy through the link in your post.

I am assuming you have a Swiss Travel Pass, not a SwissPass (that’s for residents):

Thank you for your reply. You are right, I am referring to Swiss Travel Pass. Will it be possible to do class upgrade 1 day at 52 CHF instead of the specific route which is calculated by the difference of the first and second class?

Will there be any other way to make reservation if the official reservation page is full?

Holding the STP you can also buy the Day Class Upgrade.

If the Glacier Express seat reservation tool tells you that no seats are available, the train is fully booked. Unlike ticket sales, the management of seat reservations is the sole responsibility of the operating train company; hence, you cannot do it elsewhere.

    Hi Vicky91,

Yes, it is possible to purchase a class upgrade for 1 day. But do make sure you have a Glacier Express reservation first. Alternatively, you can always take the regular train which travels on the same route as the Glacier Express.
