Zurich to Geneva on the GoldenPass train – tickets and route

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is visiting Switzerland from February 14-19 with their wife and 13-year-old son. They want to take the Golden Pass train from Zurich to Geneva, and they are looking for a more affordable ticket option compared to the Swiss Travel Pass they previously used. Their travel plan includes a stop in Montreux and Lausanne on February 18.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the train from Zurich to Interlaken, then the GoldenPass Express to Montreux before heading to Geneva for a smooth journey.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass will cover the entire trip, but it's advisable to make a seat reservation for the GoldenPass Express train to ensure availability.
  • Check the SBB website for the latest train schedules and ticket options to find the best prices.

Good day. We are travelling to Switzerland next month (me, my wife and 13 year old son) from 14-19 Feb. and would like to take the golden pass train. However, we will be coming from Zurich and would like to end up in Geneva. My wife and I bought a swiss travel pass several years ago to do this (starting from Lucerne); but this time, would like to know if there is a cheaper alternative. Our schedule is to leave Zurich on 17 Feb. and take the Golden pass line ending up up in Geneva. On 18 Feb., we plan to visit Montreux and Lausanne and then leave Geneva on 19 Feb. Would you be able to suggest what type of ticket (1st class is okay) or pass we should get and how to go about it? I am a bit confused using the sbb website. Thank you very much for tour assistance. We appreciate it.

    Hi VNLLLB,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

For the fastest option, I would suggest travelling from Zurich to Interlaken and then take the GoldenPass Express train from Interlaken to Montreux, before continuing to Geneva.

Below is the breakdown. You can check train schedules on the Swiss timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

Zurich to Interlaken (direct service, 2 hours)
Interlaken to Montreux (GoldenPass Express direct service, 3.5 h)
Montreux to Geneva (direct service, 1 h)

The Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) will cover the entire journey. However I do recommend making a seat reservation on the GoldenPass Express train. You can book the seat online: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/

    Best regards,

    Anna
