I will be taking the Golden Pass line from Montreaux. I will return to Montreaux on the same day and I am a little concerned about the amount of time it will take. Is there a part of the route that is most scenic that I can do and cut the length of the trip without missing the scenic beauty?

I would take the fastest route offered by the SBB timetable to any end point you choose on the Golden Pass route (eg Luzern, Interlaken, Spiez) then return following the Golden Pass route to enjoy the descent down to Lake Geneva.

I’m afraid by their very nature the Swiss ‘scenic trains’ take time! If the lines were flat and straight it would be argued that they aren’t ‘scenic’.

Remember that the so called modern-parlance Golden Pass is divided into three sections, only the Montreux – Zweisimmen section is the ‘true’ Golden Pass. So the obvious ‘shorter journey’ is just Montreux – Zweisimmen and back, which takes about 4 to 5 hours – eg depart Montreux 07.44, arrive back at 12.13 (just under 1 hour stay at the Zweisimmen end )

If I just do Montreaux to Zimmemann am I missing out on more beautiful spots or is that segment the nicest? Thank You

Montruex to Zweisimmen is generally rated the “most scenic” but you are in Switzerland so it is all relative. It’s all scenic.

From Spiez to Interlaken you follow the shores of Lake Thun. From Interlaken to Luzern you follow the shores of Lake Brienz then go over the Brunig Pass. All scenic routes in their own way.

It all boils down to how much time you want to spend in trains versus other things that you’d prefer to do. That’s a personal decision.

    Hello Jeffschlan1,

I see you’ve received lots of input already about your question.

As said, the Montreux – Zweisimmen part, and vice-versa, is for sure very scenic, as are the other sections, in their way.

Find some details about the Golden Pass in this link.

If you can only travel from Montreux and back then don’t worry about the scenery, just enjoy however far you can travel! The timetable will help you find out about travelling times.

I’m convinced you will enjoy your trip, however far you’ll go in the end!

    Enjoy!

    Best,
