First to Schynige Platte – Gondola/train schedules
A traveler is planning a hike from First to Schynige Platte during their stay in Wengen from September 2-6. They are looking for information on the operational hours for the gondolas and the cog train, and want to know which direction is easier for hiking. They have calculated a slow pace for the hike, considering the steep climb to Faulhorn.
- Expect the gondolas to operate from 08:30 to 17:00 in September.
- Hiking from First to Schynige Platte is generally easier as it involves a shorter climb and longer descent.
- Check train and gondola schedules in the timetable to plan your early start.
- The last train from Schynige Platte is around 5:50 PM, so be sure to complete your hike before then.
- Consider that most hikers choose to go from Schynige Platte to First for the gradual climb.

We are staying in Wengen September 2-6. One day we want to hike from First to Schynige Platte. I understand it is about 8.3 miles (15 km) and we need to allow 6 hours for the hike. We are planning to ride the series of gondolas to First and the cog train from Schynige Platte to Wilderswil. Do you know the hours of operation in September for the gondolas and Schynige Platte train? We would like to start as early as possible and make sure we finish in time before the last train down from Schynige Platte.
Also is going from First to Schynige Platte easier or the reverse from Schynige Platte to First? Last allowing 6 hours for 8.3 mile hike is about a 1.4 MPH pace (fairly slow). Is this because of the steep climb to Faulhorn ?
