Schedules for Jungfrau Region, reservations required for Schilthorn?

Short summary – read this first

Ed and his wife are planning a 4-night trip to Grindelwald at the end of July and want to spend a day exploring the Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, and Schilthorn area. They need advice on the best travel route and whether to make reservations for the Piz Gloria restaurant.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train from Grindelwald to Zweilütschinen, then transfer to Lauterbrunnen for the quickest route to Schilthorn.
  • Use the gondola from Grindelwald Terminal to Männlichen for stunning views if time allows.
  • Reservations at Piz Gloria are recommended in July, as popular time slots may fill up quickly.

Hi my wife and I will be in Grindelwald for 4 nights at the end of July.  One day we would like to dedicate to the Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Schilthorn area. Which way to Lauterbrunnen would be the best, train via interlaken or cable car via Mannlichen and Wengen. Will we need reservations at Piz Gloria?  Approximately how long will it take us from Grindelwald to Schilthorn? We will have a Jungfrau Travel Pass.

    Thanks Ed

    Hi Ed,

If you were wanting to reach Lauterbrunnen by the quicker route, you would want to take the train from Grindelwald to Zweilütschinen and change here for a  train to Lauterbrunnen and thereon you can continue on to Mürren and Schilthorn.

You also have the option to take the gondelbahn from Grindelwald Terminal to Männlichen, then the cable car to Wengen and then a train to Lauterbrunnen.

As you will have the Jungfrau Travel Pass, there is a coverage map that you can download.  This will also give you a visual idea of the routes you can take.  You can find the map I mentioned in the link below and also some online purchase options for the pass as well, if you needed any:

Use the Swiss timetable to research the journeys and the timings will be displayed:

Details for a visit to Schilthorn is explained in the attached:

Reservations for Schilthorn are not required. There is an option to purchase a boarding pass, if you wanted to skip the queue and board at a guaranteed boarding time. (All explained in the link above).

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you for the valuable information.  Would you eat at Piz Gloria or at a restaurant near Murren?

    Hi Edusan,

Personally, I would eat at Mürren but of course, the revolving restaurant at Piz Gloria on a clear day is popular for a reason 🙂

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Ed,

    >>> Would you eat at Piz Gloria or at a restaurant near Murren?

Like Yolanda, I would also prefer to eat at Mürren, or even Gimmelwald or Winteregg.

You would definitely need a reservation to eat at Piz Gloria in July, and may well find that the slot you want is already booked out at this stage. Having to stick to a particular time slot will also reduce your flexibility in planning the day.

Personally, I don’t think it is worth eating at Piz Gloria unless you have a window seat, and they only allocate window seats to parties of at least 4.

    >>> Which way to Lauterbrunnen would be the best, train via interlaken or cable car via Mannlichen and Wengen.

If you have the time, I would choose the gondola/cable car combination to get to Lauterbrunnen via Wengen. The rides are thrilling and the view from Männlichen is magnificent.  It would be a shame to miss it unless your schedule just can’t accommodate the longer travel time.

Enjoy your time in the Jungfrau Region!
