Grindelwald visitor”s card and Grindelwald Bus

Short summary – read this first

A family of four is heading to Grindelwald from June 23 to 28. They are renting an apartment and want to know if they can get a visitor's card from the tourist office, if the local bus is free with it, and whether the Ortsbus is the same as the Grindelwald Bus.

Key takeaways:
  • You can get the visitor's card at the tourist office, even if you're renting an apartment.
  • The local bus service (Ortsbus) is free with the visitor's card.
  • The Ortsbus and the Grindelwald Bus refer to the same service.

Hi. Our family of four -2 adults and 2 teenagers (16 and 14 yrs) will be in Grindelwald from 23 – 28 June 2019. We are planning on purchasing the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass – Grindelwald is the last leg of our 14-day Swiss trip. I read somewhere about the Grindelwald visitor’s card and my understanding is that if tourists stay in a hotel the visitor’s card is a given. However, we are renting an apartment and my first question is: can we apply for the visitor’s card at the tourist office?

Secondly, is the local bus free with the visitor’s card. It is quite a steep climb to where we are staying – the youth hostel my husband and I stayed in 20 years ago is a short distance from our rented accommodation. I remember those walks up to the youth hostel as if it was yesterday. . .

Thirdly, is the Orstbus and the Grindelwald Bus the same thing. . . I’m an eager Googler, but somehow I struggle to find information regarding the visitor’s card and the bus service.

    Warmest greetings

    Hi Alta,

Ortsbus means town bus. It’s free with the visitor’s card, you can verify that through the link on http://www.myswissalps.com/gr indelwald/hotels. The landlord of your apartment will normally give you the card.

Swiss Travel Pass coverage for buses in and around Grindelwald has always been somewhat unclear. The latest information I know of is here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity. The Ortsbus should be free as well, as far as I know.
