Has anyone hired a guide for skiing in Zermatt?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a ski trip to Zermatt from November 29th to December 1st and is wondering if hiring a guide for their first day on the slopes is necessary since it's early in the ski season. They are looking for beginner and intermediate runs and also want recommendations for ski rentals in the village.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking a lesson or hiring a guide to get familiar with Zermatt slopes, especially since the terrain differs from North American mountains.
  • Check online for local ski schools in Zermatt to get useful information and links to lessons.
  • Ski rentals are widely available in the village, so you don’t necessarily have to rent at the ski lodge.
  • Expect fewer runs to be open at the start of the season, but popular areas are generally accessible.
  • The Cervinia link is likely to be open and offers excellent runs for skiers.

    Hello!

I was told by a friend that it might be helpful to hire a guide for 1st day of skiing in Switzerland since the mountains and skiing are very different from N. American mountains. We are going to Zermatt last week of November (29th-1st) I am aware that it is still early season skiing so I am also thinking that only a few runs will be open then since it is not in the popular ski months. If anyone can give me insights on if thiswould be recommended or not? BTW, we are planning for getting our ski legs back for early season skiing since I am traveling there for a course anyway. We plan to ski beginner and intermediate runs. (I ski and my friend snowboards)

Also, is there recommendations for ski rentals in the village or are the rentals at the ski lodge?

    Thank you.

    Hello Blonde Gypsy,

I think it is clever to take a ski lesson from someone in Zermatt if you do not know this resort.

Although you are not a beginner, I still recommend having a look at this page:http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/winter/beginnerski. On the right side you can find links to Swiss ski schools, check the box called ‘Information on other websites’.

Personally having skied at Zermatt many times, I don’t think you need a guide – I think that will cost a lot of money. (http://www.zermatt.ch/en/betaskischule/Privater-Ski-und-Snowboardunterricht/Private-ski-and-snowboard-lessons)

There are a number of wide open pistes in the various Zermatt ski areas where I think you will be able to get used to the slopes quite quickly.

thank You! I am pretty excited to check off Zermatt as my swiss alps bucket list place to ski! I hope to ski the pass that goes to Cervinia on the Italian side but if I don’t get or if it is not open when I am there, I’ll be ok. but it is a bucket list item also. 🙂

It has been many years since I skied in Zermatt, but we found it very easy to navigate on our own. The trail map is easy to follow and the trails/pistes are well groomed, well marked and wonderfully long with wide open vistas. We brought our own equipment on that trip, but if I went again I would only bring my boots, and rent the rest of my equipment. I did that in Verbier, and it worked out well. The link to Cervinia is highly likely to be open as it at one of the highest points of the Zermatt ski area, and the wide slopes on the Swiss side are the ones I was referring to, and they are on glacier base (Theodul).

Here’s my picture from back in 2005:

You would be really lucky if the ‘Matterhorn’ piste was open as that gets really close to the lower slopes of the Matterhorn itself , whilst at the same time not being a particularly challenging run.
