Has anyone taken the bus from Zurich or Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is exploring transportation options from Zurich Airport to Interlaken and seeks feedback on the effectiveness and cost of using services like Jayride or shared taxis. They're curious if anyone has experience with this route, especially regarding booking in advance and the validity of Swiss travel passes.

Key takeaways:
  • Using shared taxi services like Jayride can be quicker and cheaper, but they must be booked in advance.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass and other national transport tickets are not valid for shared taxi services.
  • For reliable travel, consider the train as a backup option, as it may provide more certainty in scheduling.

I have just looked at the Rome to Rio website.  What you are calling ‘buses’ are, I think, shared (large) taxis similar to Uber.  From Zurich Airport to Interlaken is likely to be quicker with ‘Jayride’ and quite probably cheaper.

BUT the ride has to be booked in advance.  Even more importantly, the various Swiss national transport tickets such as the Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/), Saver Day Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/)   , and Half Fare Cards (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/)  will not be valid.

I will, however, be very interested in what others have say on this matter.

    Kind regards

    Roger

    Hi Alizar,

I have only heard about the a mini-bus service called “Shuttler” from Zurich airport to Interlaken.  I have not used it personally so unaware of the cost.  From Interlaken, you would need to make your own way to Lauterbrunnen.

Roger is correct, if you had a rail pass, this service is not covered with any of the rail passes he mentions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hello again

Thinking back over my 40+ trips to Switzerland, I do recall that I used a ‘shared taxi’ service to and from my hotel on one of those trips. This was about 25 years ago.  It was I think part of a ‘package’ which my younger brother (a travel agent) booked for me ‘at the last minute’.

The hotel was at Triemli. on the south-west edge of Zurich (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zurich/) .  The trip to the hotel was great. I was the only passenger in a vehicle which could carry 7 passengers.  The journey, in the evening of the 24th December, took less than 30 minutes and I was taken to the front door of the the hotel.

The journey back to the airport on 4th January was a different story.  It took over 90 minutes, as the ‘taxi’ toured the city centre(!) picking up passengers.  I WAS WORRIED THAT I WOULD MISS MY FLIGHT.

NEVER use shared taxis (or something similar) on journeys TO airports, train stations, bus stations, harbours etc.

    Best wishes

    Roger

    Thanks, Roger and Yolanda,

I’ll look into this a bit more and if I find out anything that might help, I’ll post it. At least there’s always the train.
