Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland for a few days between the 7th and 14th of January, flying into Zurich. They are unsure whether to book a hotel in Zurich or another city, and they seek advice on train travel and passes since they want to experience beautiful snowy scenery but don't ski or snowboard.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying in towns like Lucerne or in the Jungfrau region for easier access to the mountains.
  • Use the Swiss railways timetable to efficiently plan your trips between towns and scenic locations.
  • Look into the Swiss Travel Pass, as it can save you money during your short stay and cover most of your travel needs.

Hi all, the girlfriend and I are thinking of coming over to Switzerland for a few days sometime between the 7th and 14th of January, will be flying into Zurich, would you recommend booking a hotel in Zurich for our stay or is it better to book a hotel in another region ? We will probably be travelling by train or bus while in Switzerland, which pass would you recommend bearing in mind we will only be there for a few days ? We dont ski or snowboard but love scenic places and so many places look breathtaking, but at the same time we dont want to spend all day on a train although the views do look amazing, we love looking around places and we would most love to see snow, sorry for all the questions with every aspect but there are so many choices that I thought if we describe briefly what we are looking for i am sure many of you could offer us ideal suggestions of where to visit and how as it is difficult to gauge distance and travel time of journeys to different places 🙂

any help/advice/suggestions would be VERY much appreciated 🙂

    Thankyou

Hi Mr. Dee and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Picking which town to stay at for your 3 days will depend on what you decide to see and do while in Switzerland. If you want to visit the mountains, Zurich won’t make sense as it is quite far from the major mountains.

Towns like Lucerne: http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne and others in the Jungfrau region: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion are very popular for those wanting to be in or near the mountains.

You can use the Swiss railways timetable to plan trips between towns and mountains: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

All travel is done by train in Switzerland, buses are used in some areas where there are no trains running. The timetable will show you the types is transport that would be used.

If you don’t have anything specific you want to see in Switzerland, have a look at the popular attractions here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ac tivities.

Once you’ve decided on what you want to do and see you can then choose where to stay and which rail pass will save you the most money (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses).
