Best route from Zurich-Lucerne to Mt. Rigi + ticket purchases

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a day trip from Zurich to Lucerne in early April to hike Mt. Rigi. They want to confirm if their plan of taking a train to Lucerne, catching a ferry to Weggis, and then using the lift to hike is good, and if there's a better route. They also need to know if they can buy a Mt. Rigi day pass with a credit card at the ticket booth.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the weather before your trip to ensure good hiking conditions.
  • Consider the Majestic Round Trip: take a cogwheel train from Arth Goldau, then return via Vitznau and ferry to Lucerne.
  • Use the Swiss timetable for planning your travel schedule.
  • You can buy a Mt. Rigi day pass with a credit card at ticket booths in Weggis or at the base of the mountain.

Hello! I am planning on taking a day trip from Zurich to Lucerne in early April so that I can hike Mt. Rigi. I have a few questions, as this will be my first time in Switzerland and I need to make sure I have a good plan going forward. My plan is to take a train from Zurich in the morning and catch the 9:12am ferry from Lucerne to Weggis. I will then take the Weggis-Rigi Kaltbad lift and begin hiking at the top. My question is, does this seem like a good plan? Is there an alternate route that is better? Also, I will only be in Switzerland a few days and will not have a pass of any kind, so can I buy a Mt. Rigi day pass (with credit card) at a ticket booth somewhere in Weggis or at the base of the mountain? Thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

    Hi joewujek,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your plans for your first visit here.  That’s great you are planning a trip to Mt. Rigi.  Do check the weather (https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/practical/weather/forecast/ ) nearer the time, so you know it will be favourable.  Be a shame to head up there, and not be able to enjoy your hike and the views.

There are a few ways you can travel to Rigi.  All explained in the attached link:  https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/rigi/,   Scroll to “How to reach Rigi: directions and map”. I’d work with what fits with your schedule.  Some enjoy taking the cogwheel train up from Arth Goldau, then taking the train down to Vitznau and continue with the ferry back to Lucerne. This is called the Majestic Round Trip, which you can also do this in reverse.

Do use the Swiss timetable to plan and gauge your trip:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

Hike suggestions at Rigi can also be found in the link above and there is also a section for online ticket purchases here:

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
