Hiking on Mt Pilatus and Ebenalp in April?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a two-day visit to Zurich in April and is eager to hike Mount Pilatus and Ebenalp for some views of the Swiss Alps. They are concerned about trail conditions due to possible snow and are seeking advice on the feasibility of hiking in these areas during that month.

Key takeaways:
  • Hiking to the top of Pilatus is currently not possible due to snow; however, you can hike from the middle station to the valley station if trails are open.
  • The cable car to Ebenalp is under maintenance until April 22, meaning hiking there is not an option for now.
  • April is not considered an ideal month for hiking in the Swiss Alps; the best months are typically June to September.

    Hey

I wonder if I could hike Mount Pilatus and Ebenalp during April? I would be in Zurich next week for 2 days. I’m looking forward to do some hiking to get some views from the Swiss Alps. I read that some trails will be closed or covered in snow during this month. Has anyone here done any hikes to these places (Ebenalp and Pilatus) during April or around these areas?

Thanks in advance for your kind response.

May all of you have a happy weekend.

    Hi gallardogabo,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Hiking to the top of Pilatus is not possible at the moment. It snowed quite a bit last week so the mountain tops are still covered in snow. But it might be possible to hike from the middle station to the valley station (Fräkmuntegg/Kriensenegg to Kriens). You can check if the trails are open here: http://www.pilatus.ch/en/discover/hiking-on-the-pilatus

In Ebenalp, hiking is also not possible. The cable car is currently under maintenance and will only be operational from 22 April onwards. During this period, the best hiking trails are on ground level, exploring meadows and Spring flowers.

    Hi Anna,

Thank you very much for the information. I will take a look. If somethings else pops up I will write a question again. I think Aprils is not the best month to be in Switzerland for hiking. Maybe the next time I would be able to hike some mountains.

Have a happy day and may you be healthy!

    Hi Gabriel,

That’s right. April is probably not the ideal time to go hiking in the Swiss Alps. The best months are usually June to September. For a general idea on when is the best time to visit, have a look here: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

    Regards,
