Scenic route Bern-Lake Thun-Brienz-Interlaken in the timetable?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Sefy is looking for a scenic train ride from Bern to Interlaken along Lake Thun and Brienz on June 5th. They found only fast trains taking about an hour but want a slower, more scenic option. They are seeking advice on how to find this route.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train at 34 minutes past the hour and change to bus number 21 at Thun for a scenic route along the north shore of Lake Thun.
  • Consider the lake boats between Thun and Interlaken for a slower experience, although they are infrequent.
  • If possible, travel to Lucerne for the stunning Luzern-Interlaken Express train ride to Interlaken, which is very scenic.

Looking to catch scenic train ride along shores of Lake Thun and Brienz to Interlaken from Bren on Thursday 5th June 2025 which takes approximately 2 hours. But can only find trains that take one hour eg. 8:34  or 9.04am train – Train to interlaken Ost, direct via spiez (the lake) 8.34am from bern takes an hour. 4 stops, plat 7.  (next one is 9.04). How find the scenic one?

    Hello Sefy

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

I am afraid that there are no SLOW trains between Bern and Interlaken.  There are only FAST trains departing at 04 and 34 past each hour.  If the train is a double-deck (most are) sit on the left upstairs.

I was going to suggest taking the train at 04 past the hour and changing to a number 60 bus to Interlaken at Spiez.  The bus will be a bit slower than the train, but it will be a single-deck.

Probably better would be to get the train departing at 34 past the hour, changing at Thun to the number 21 bus for Interlaken.  This route goes along the NORTH shore of Lake Thun.  Going this way would take about 75 minutes.

There are also the lake boats between Thun and Interlaken.  Now the boats are SLOW!   They take over two hours.  But they are not very frequent.  In winter, there is just one trip a day!

    Best wishes

    Roger

    Hi Sefy,

    Very helpful from Roger.

More on the boat rides on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the links below:

If time and plans allowed, you could make your way to Lucerne. This is where the GoldenPass train ride commences.  The Luzern-Interlaken Express would take you all the way to Interlaken Ost which is a very scenic route.

You can read more on what to expect on this stunning train ride here. Scroll to ” Lucerne to Interlaken Ost” in the “The GoldenPass route explained, with map” section:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
