Hi sunrunner,
In my opinion, it’s always better to purchase a railpass ahead of the trip so that you can immediately use it on arrival. Buying in advance saves times. Option to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price. Of course it’s also possible to but the STPs at the train station at the airport.
You and your wife each need a pass but you can order them together. Details on the how to use the STP here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/howtouse

Anna

Hi Anna
We won’t be at the airport, as we will be coming from Luxembourg by train – possibly entering the country at Basel for a train switch to Lauterbrunnen.
Could we buy the swiss travel pass in Luxembourg at either the airport a train station?
Worried about getting it getting lost in the mail system here.

Hi Sunrunner,
I don’t know about Luxembourg station, I would not count on it to be available. Buying online is the standard procedure nowadays. I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s rare for passes to get lost, but if it happens it will also be solved. The risk of buying a paper pass and losing it is greater. You won’t be able to get a replacement, while a digital pass can be backed up and printed as many times as you like. If you worry about it, I’d recommend to get it from the official SBB tourist web shop at https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/#/en/product/swissPass. Their delivery works great. Other purchase options can be found via Anna’s link.
Enjoy your trip!
