How many days are enough to cover Zurich and Lucerne without rushing?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland, specifically to Zurich and Lucerne, and is trying to figure out how many days to spend in each city without feeling rushed. They want to experience highlights like a lake cruise, old town walks, and museums while focusing on relaxation rather than heavy hikes.

Key takeaways:
  • Spend around 3 days in each city for a balanced experience of sightseeing and relaxation.
  • Consider basing yourself in one city, depending on whether you prefer culture in Zurich or relaxation in Lucerne.
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient access to public transportation, which is highly efficient in Switzerland.

I’m planning a trip to Switzerland soon and trying to figure out how many days would be ideal to explore Zurich and Lucerne without feeling rushed.

I’d love to see the main highlights — maybe a lake cruise, old town walk, museums, and some time just relaxing and soaking in the views. I’m not planning to do heavy hikes this time.

For anyone who has been, how many days would you recommend to get a good balance between sightseeing and relaxation? Also, is it better to stay in one city and do day trips, or split the stay between Zurich and Lucerne?

Any itinerary tips or must-see spots would be really appreciated!

    Hello Travelmentor

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thank you for giving us an outline of your travel plans.

(I have been visiting Switzerland for over fifty years.  Twice in the early nineteen-seventies I based myself in Lucerne.  Nowadays I base myself in Zurich.)

    Three questions.

Roughly how long is your trip?

When are you going? (I am guessing late October, or November)

Are you wanting to see a large part of Switzerland, or are you wanting to confine yourself to areas within (say) 60 minutes journey time from your base(s)?

    Zurich and/or Lucerne as bases(s).

Get out a map of Switzerland.

The two cities are only 67 kms (35 miles) apart.  There are two trains an hour every day between the two cities, and they take 42-50 minutes.

In view of that fact, I would tentatively suggest that you base yourself in one city or the other.

If the emphasis is going to be on sight-seeing and museums then I would perhaps stay in Zurich.  If the emphasis is on relaxation and activities like boat cruises and short(ish) train rides, then I would suggest Lucerne.  (There is a good boat service on both Lake Zurich and Lake Lucerne all year round.)

Both cities are superb hubs for public transport.

Swiss Public Transport and the Swiss Travel Pass.

Switzerland has arguably the best public transport system in the world.  The trains, buses, trams/streetcars and boats are frequent and are timed to interconnect.

The Swiss Travel Pass gives you the freedom of this wonderful network.  I would suggest that you seriously consider the ‘ten days for the price of eight’ special promotion on First Class Swiss Travel Passes explained in the thread which moderator Arno has ‘pinned’ at the top of this forum.

For the moment, I am going to stop there.

    Very best wishes

    Roger

Hi travelmentor, and thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

As Roger has pointed out, both cities are worth your time. They’re attractive for their historic centres, but also as central locations to cover lots the surrounding lakes, mountains, and train routes.

I don’t know how many days you have available, but in general, I’d say that about 3 days per city is a fair number. This allows you to get to know the centres, enjoy some nearby activities (e.g. the boat rides mentioned by Roger), and make one trip a bit further away.

You can use the links added to Roger’s reply to find all information about the towns, plus the activities you can enjoy in and near Lucerne/Zurich.

The city walks below may interest you as well. We’ve designed them to let you see lots of highlights in just a couple of hours:
