Hi Samlam,
Great idea to make a day trip to Zermatt! I’d recommend this easy town walk to explore not only its town center, but also the beautiful quieter districts: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/zermatt. It will take about an hour, apart from breaks of course.
A Gornergrat visit could indeed take about 2 hours if you don’t spend that much time at the top: https://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat. You may want to make a hike along the railway route, e.g. http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/rotenboden-riffelalp. Or have lunch in the mountain restaurant!
Of course there are more activities in Zermatt. You’ll find them here: https://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt/activities. What can reasonably be done within 1 day depends on your preferences, and on how late you with to return to Iseltwald. I’d personally leave it with exploring Zermatt and Gornergrat. That way you won’t feel rushed. It would also leave time to travel by RegioExpress Lötschberger on either your way to Zermatt or your way back to Iseltwald: https://www.myswissalps.com/lotschberger.

Thank you so much Annika! I believe we will take the regional train fr visp to Domodossola on our way back to Italy. Is June still considered spring ? We hope to see the Matterhorn in June ! 🤗🤗🤗

Hi Samlam. June is kind of an in-between month in terms of seasons. It can still be chilly at higher altitudes, and there are better chances of snow on mountains (such as the Matterhorn) than in July and August. But it might just as well feel like summer with high temperatures throughout the country. Maybe this information helps a bit: https://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit and https://www.myswissalps.com/weather.

How much time you spend in Zermatt depends on what you want to see and how you want to see it, and how leisurely you want to be
For superb but somewhat distant views of the Matterhorn, you just need to ride the railway up to Gornergrat. This also gives you a chance to get fairly close view of the highest mountain in Switzerland (Dufourspitz aka Monte Rosa) which is due south from the Gornergrat railway upper terminus. You can spend as little as 30 minutes at the summit of Gornergrat. For a somewhat closre angle view of the Matterhorn you would go to Klein Matterhorn, but that takes much longer than going to Gornergrat as the base station for Klein Matterhorn is at the far end of Zermatt village.
In Zermatt itself, it takes an absolute minimum of about 1 hour to walk the village centre. Don’t miss some of the back streets where, just a few moments walk take you from shops selling very expensive jewellery and watches to back streets which still contain hay and livestock barns still used by farmers.

Thank you for your input 1960man ☺️. We plan to leave Iseltwald first thing so we can spend time up in Zermatt . We might even shorten our 2 hr stay in Gornegrat so we can come back down to Zermatt and spend another hr there before heading back. We surely will tour the town and take our time because we can still view the Matterhorn from there ☺️. Thanks again!
