How to book Glacier Express with overnight stay?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Felix is planning a trip on the Glacier Express with an overnight stop in Andermatt. He is trying to figure out how to make reservations for separate legs of his journey: traveling from Zermatt to Andermatt, and then from Andermatt to St. Moritz the next day. After some advice, he successfully called the Glacier Express to arrange his trip.

Key takeaways:
  • To reserve specific legs of the Glacier Express trip, use their official website for seat reservations directly.
  • Consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass, which includes the Glacier Express, for potential savings.
  • If the Glacier Express doesn't fit your schedule, you can travel these routes using regular trains that don’t require reservations.

How do we Reserve the Glacier express with an overnight stop in Andermatt…..? On the reservations site there seems only the possibility to reserve a full trajectory and no choice of time either….. How can we reserve more directly so that we travel from Zermatt to Andermatt and then the next day from Andermatt to St Moritz…We already have hotel rooms for the three nights but can’t seem to be able to book the train part…..

thanks for help on this matter

Hi Felix and welcome to MySwissAlps!

How nice that you are going to travel by the Glacier Express! I am sure it will be a wonderful journey.
Can I ask about your whole itinerary? Maybe it would worth to buy a rail pass, which includes also the Glacier Express. Read about the Glacier Express tickets and what kind of rail passes include its route at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets.
Also it worths to have a look at the packages: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/packages.

    Hi felix b.!

Great that you’re planning a trip by Glacier Express, I hope you’ll enjoy it! There are several websites allowing you to arrange for seat reservations. Not all of them include the option to start a section in Andermatt, I guess because there’s less demand for it. But you can definitely arrange for reservations for these separate legs at the Glacier Express website itself. You’ll find a link to their reservation system under “More information” at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets.

Ildikó rightly pointed out the option of rail passes. Here’s how to figure out which one is best for your plans: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass. If you do have to buy regular tickets for the Glacier Express journey and/or other trips, you can have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets.

Note that you can also travel these routes using regular trains, that don’t require seat reservations. You’ll find the differences explained under “Regular trains versus Glacier Express” at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress. I do think the panoramic windows of the Glacier Express, the information about the route, not having to switch trains and the comfort of the train add to the experience, but if this doesn’t fit your plans for whatever reason, the regional trains are a good option.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks for the feed back!

In the end I called glacier express and since I wanted the excellence class they configured it for me. Basically the regular glacier express to Andermatt ans then the next day the excellence treatment from Andeatt to St Moritz but I do have to pay from Zermatt since that’s how the experience is put together. So a bit more expensive then I had dreamed of but still ok in the scheme of things.
