How to force SBB timetable to scenic/fast routes?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named home2mars is planning a 15-day trip in Switzerland with their 75-year-old parents. They seek advice on the most scenic and direct train routes from Zurich Airport to Interlaken West, as well as from Interlaken to Montreux/Geneva. They aim to minimize train changes while enjoying beautiful views during their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the Golden Pass route for a scenic trip from Zurich Airport to Interlaken West, requiring a change at Lucerne.
  • For traveling from Interlaken West to Montreux, opt for the route via Zweisimmen and be prepared to change trains there.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers many scenic routes; consult the validity map to visualize your travel options.
  • Make train reservations during peak seasons for panoramic trains to secure seats, especially if traveling with elderly family members.

    Hi all,

I am a little overwhelm with the timetable options on the website (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable). It is hard to easily see which route is the best for the most direct route AND the most scenic option. Yes, I understand that you can “force” the webpage to display certain route by using the VIA feature, but that assuming I ALREADY KNOW that information.

To elaborate is that I would prefer to use the “scenic” or the panoramic train as much as possible. I will have 15-day Swiss Travel Pass. However, not all my days are on the beginning of said scenic train.

    Specific questions:

    1. Suggestion routes or options from Zurich Airport to Interlaken West. Scenic but not a lot of train change as I will have 75-year old parents with me.

Can I use Golden Pass line for this? How about Lucern-Interlaken Express? Are they actually the same thing?

Note: I understand that Interlaken Ost is the more common “ending” station in Interlaken but our hotel (Merkur – West Station Lodge) is much closer to West station (remember the 75-year old parents :-))

    2. After 2 days in Interlaken, we will continue to Montreux/Geneva. Same question, how to get into the most scenic but the most direct exact route? Do I have to go to Interlaken Ost station to be able to use Golden Pass route?

More generic question: how to use the timetable website to easily recognize the most direct but scenic options from point A to point B?

    Thank you in advance,

Hello home2mars and welcome to MySwissAlps

The good news is that just about any train journey in Switzerland is “scenic”.

Look at the map you can download from http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity.

Apart from showing the Swiss Travel Pass coverage it is also a fine way of visualising the routes from A to B. The second page on the map shows the major panoramic routes.

    So to you questions:

    1. Zurich Airport to Interlaken West will take you via the Golden Pass route. You need via Luzern and Meiringen. There are some connections that require a change at Zurich main station and some go direct to Luzern. At Luzern you will change to the Luzern – Interlaken Express which services that leg of the Golden Pass route. You will also need to change trains to get to Interlaken West as the West-bound trains stop at Interlaken Ost. If you go Zurich Airport to Interlaken West you will go via Bern.

    2. Look for Interlaken West to Montreux via Zweisimmen. You will change trains at Zweisimmen and possibly Spiez depending on the connection you choose.

For more info see http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass/gettingthere

You can’t use the timetable alone to recognise a scenic route. In the absence os a “via” the timetable will always suggest the fastest route.

You don;t say when you are travelling but it is recommended to make reservations if travelling on the panoramic trains Zweisimmen to Montreux in peak tourist seasons. You can make reservations for including seat selection at bit.ly/2kaq6Rf. Click the “e” for English language top right of the page. (where it says “Sprachwahl: d i f e”). Then change the class of travel, date of travel and start/end points to suit.

Thank you all. Getting better in understanding the website. Still too many little things that I need to immersed with, for example choosing Fluelen (See) to force the boat option to Luzern 😉
