Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to take the Glacier Express from Zurich and wants advice on the best way to do it. They are concerned about the 8-hour duration of the whole trip and are considering other activities during their visit. They have a 3-day travel pass and are looking for alternatives, including squeezing in a Rhine tour and paragliding.

Key takeaways:
  • You can board the Glacier Express at Chur and get off at Brig if you don't want to do the full 8-hour journey.
  • For a shorter experience, consider reserving seats from Chur to Andermatt, which takes about 2.5 hours.
  • Mount Rigi offers a combined boat and train trip from Zurich and is included in the Swiss Travel Pass, making it a great alternative.

The Glacier Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress) runs between St Moritz and Zermatt. From Zurich you can join it at Chur and get off at Brig if you don’t want to cover the whole route. You can also cover any part of the route on regular trains and avoid having to make reservations.

    Hi onlyme123,

The whole route is about 8 hours (check Rockoyster’s link). Do you just have 1 day or is this part of a larger itinerary around Switzerland?

I don’t want to be on it the whole 8 hrs :). I don’t know if it’s worth it ? I think I want to do more than just sit for 8 hrs . You replied to my other post ass well . The one with my travel plans . Instead of this how can I squeeze the Rhine in ? And paragliding , where can I do that at? I do have the 3 day travel pass and since the glacier is included (minus reservation fee) I thought i would do it

    Hi onlyme123,

What about a combined boat/train trip to the top of Mount Rigi? That’s much closer to Zurich and included in the Swiss Travel Pass too: http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi.

    Yes, Rigi is nice too.

If you really want to do the Glacier Express just reserve seats from Chur to Andermatt and then return from there (about 2.5 hours on the GEX train). Explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress
