Using the Swiss Travel Pass from Munich to Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Dordor is planning a trip to Switzerland with family from September 7 to September 16. They are unsure whether to buy the 8-day or 14-day Swiss Travel Pass and want to know if the pass is valid for their train and bus journey from Luzern to Munich. They also seek alternatives for their travel plans.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is valid only up to the Swiss border, so you must buy a ticket for the journey to Munich afterward.
  • Consider purchasing an 8-day Swiss Travel Pass for your stay and additional tickets or a Saver Day Pass for the non-covered trips.
  • If traveling by bus from Zurich to Munich, the Swiss Travel Pass does not apply, so a separate ticket is necessary.

    Hi, there.

My family and I are planning to visit Switzerland from 7 Sep to 16 Sep? We are struggling whether we should buy the 8 days or 14 days Consecutive Swiss Travel Pass. As we don’t really need to use the travel pass on 15 Sep, while we will be leaving Luzern and proceed to Munich (Germany). We are thinking to take the rail to Zurich and change to the long-distance coach from Zurich – Munich. We are wondering whether the travel pass is valid for this cross border journey. Or, are there any better alternative? Thank you for your assistance.

Hello Dodor and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Nice to hear your family and you are coming to Switzerland.

The Swiss Travel Pass is valid up to the Swiss border, from where onwards you would need to buy a ticket to Munich. This is only true though if traveling by train, I’m not sure if you’re referring to busses when you say coach.

For traveling days and as a helpful add-on to a Swiss Travel Pass normally the Saver Day Pass makes sense looking into, make sure you check all the tabs of this link:

    Dear Steph,

Thank you for getting back to me. I checked from Google and SSB that there is a route from Luzern to Munich, which I should take IR75 from Luzern to Zurich and then change to ICB 42234 from Zurich to Munich.

    IC75 Luzern — Zürich — ICB 42234 München 08:35 – 13:29

I seem that it is the best way, but we are wondering if the Swiss Travel Pass is valid for this trip or not.

Appreciated if you could give us some advice.

    Many thanks!

    Cheers,

    Dordor

    Hello Dordor!

The connection you’ve mentioned makes sense for your trip to Munich. The Swiss Travel Pass would only cover rail journeys up to the border though, not bus journeys. It won’t matter that much for your decision on an 8 or 15 day Swiss Travel Pass though, as the rail segment Lucerne-Basel (which would be covered by a Swiss Travel Pass if you were to take a rail rather than a bus trip) would only cost CHF 34.

An 8 day Swiss Travel Pass plus either regular tickets or Saver Day Passes for the non-covered days, as suggested by Steph, might indeed be a good solution for your 10 day stay:

Hi Dordor, sounds like you’re sorted, but we travelled from Munich into Switzerland in July and thought I’d let you know our experience! We travelled by Flixbus down to Friedrichshafen (€9) the bus station is very near the boat jetty where we boarded a boat ( half price with STP) about (€8) travelling across to Romanshorn where the station is right by the lake from where we travelled to Schaffhausen by train up the edge of the lake- it was all amazing and so easy! Hope this helps have a great trip
