Hello, I’m interested in booking tickets for travel to Jungfrau on 14 June. I’d like to plan my journey with an ascent via Lauterbrunnen and a descent via Grindelwald. However, I haven’t been able to find any booking options online. Considering it will be peak season, I’d like to make seat reservations well in advance. Could you kindly guide me on how to proceed with these bookings?
Thank you!
Nice to hear you are planning a visit to Jungfraujoch.
You can find online purchase options in the link below. Scroll to “Where to buy Jungfraujoch tickets and tours: recommended webshops”, the first option would suit your requirements. (If you have time, watch the helpful video in the guide too, (it’s listed in the table of contents)).
Seat reservations are compulsory between May and August, you can do this online too, if you go to the “other websites of interest” section, you can find the necessary link.
Kind regards,
Yolanda

Hello: This is a very timely post as I was about to ask a similar question about Jungfraujoch tickets and seat reservations. As mentioned the swissrailways.com site specifically says that seat reservations are “compulsory” between May and August. The link they provide takes you to a site where for 10 CHF each you make a reservation. This requires you to put in your date of travel, departure site and route up and down, then it gives you an itinerary complete with departure times of each leg and layover times in between. Does this mean that you are required to keep to those reservation times or you lose your seat? I have read on your website that you recommend taking time to stop at some of the intermediary sites such as Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher, but wondering how we do that if the reservation only allows you so much time between trains.
Also, there seem to be conflicting opinions on how far ahead tickets should be bought and seats reserved. Several posts recommend waiting until even the day of the excursion to buy tickets in order to avoid a foggy/cloudy day. But others recommend buying tickets ahead of time so as not to miss out on the chance to go at all. We are traveling in mid-June and not sure which way to go with this. Seems risky to spend hundreds on tickets when the experience could be seriously degraded by clouds and fog, but equally risky to wait until the last minute and potentially face a sold out situation.

Hi Marc,
Welcome to MySwissAlps.
That’s correct. Seat reservation is compulsory if you are visiting the Jungfraujoch between May and August. The reservation ensures you have a guaranteed seat for the journey between Eigergletscher and Jungfraujoch and Jungfraujoch and Kleine Scheidegg. You can decide if you want to stay 1 hour or longer at the top. If you miss your connection, you might have to wait before you are allowed to board the gondola/ cogwheel train. Please see attached screenshot.
Your ticket still allows you to travel either from Grindelwald or Wengen and make a stop along the way.

Hi Anna:
Thank you for your reply and clarification. Not sure that the screenshot you attached is the correct one; I don’t think it applies to this inquiry.
Also was hoping to get your thoughts on my other question (see above) regarding the need for and timing of reserving Jungfraujoch tickets ahead of time for a mid-June visit.

Hi Marcus,
The seat reservation is only valid between Eigergletscher and Jungfraujoch and Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch. If you don’t want to lose your seat reservation, you should take the recommended connection.
Generally, it’s advisable to purchase your Jungfraujoch tickets after checking the weather forecast and mountain webcam. Usually the weather forecast is reliable up to 5 days in advance so I would buy the tickets the day or 2 days before.

I shall be visiting jungfrau region between 18th to 20th May 2025. There is no option of selecting the different routes in jungfrau official website. How to book the tickets for grindelwald to jungfraujoch and return via lauterbrunnen? Is it possible to book tickets 1-2days advance from ticket counter or online? Do ticket counter issue ticket with seat reservation? Can I book ticket from lucerne or engelberg or zurich after reaching the cities?

Hi Ani,
There will be no train service between Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg and Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg from 5 May to 25 May, 2025 due to maintenance. During this period, you can only travel to Jungfraujoch via the Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald Terminal. If you wish to travel to Lauterbrunnen, you can take the train from Grindelwald Terminal and change in Zweilutschinen.
It is possible to purchase the excursion tickets in advance online: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/#price. Seat reservation can be booked online through the Jungfrau Railway website. You can also purchase the tickets and seat reservation directly from the ticket counter at the SBB Travel Centre in Zurich and Lucerne.
Thanks for the reply. Jungfrau website shows the train between grindelwald and kleine scheidegg is not available on these dates. But I couldn’t find any information about the train between jungfraujoch and kleine scheidegg and from kleine scheidegg upto wengen. Can you please check and inform because jungfrau website is allowing to book ticket from interlaken to jungfraujoch where there is an option of returning via lauterbrunnen.

Hi Ani,
According to the website, there is no train service between Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg between 5 May and 23 May, 2025 due to maintenance. During this period, you can travel from Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch via the Eiger Express in Grindelwald Terminal. The train service between Kleine Scheidegg and Wengen is running according to the timetable so for the descent, it is possible to take the cogwheel train down from Jungfraujoch to Eigergletscher then Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen and continue to Lauterbrunnen.

Hi Ani,
Yes, that’s correct.
You can keep yourself updated by checking the Swiss timetable for this trip. Any changes will be displayed.
Hi All,
To clarify the closures on the Wengernalpbahn.
Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg via Grund (the cog-wheel train) is closed for maintenance from 5th – 23rd May 2025.
As far as I can see, this spring no part of the line on the other side of the mountain from Lauterbrunnen via Wengen to Kleine Scheidrgg affected. You can travel any day up or down as normal.
So you can still go up one way and down the other i.e. from Grindelwald Terminal via the brilliant Eiger Express to Eigergletscher and from there on the Jungfraubahn train to and from Jungfraujoch. Then return from Eigergletscher via Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen.
If you find the thinner air of high altitudes difficult then I recommend going up via the Wengen route as it takes longer and gives more time to acclimatise. You can always stop for a while on the way at Wengen and/or Kleine Scheidegg. On the way down enjoy the Eiger Express.
Andrew
