Interlaken-Bern: train too busy to board in West?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is heading to Interlaken in September and wants to know if taking a train from Interlaken West at 11am will make it hard for him and his wife to sit together since the train may already have passengers from Interlaken Ost. He is worried about finding seats next to each other but is reassured by other forum members that mid-morning trains aren't usually crowded.

Key takeaways:
  • Don't worry about seating; mid-morning trains in September are generally not busy.
  • You can check the train's expected occupancy in the Swiss timetable before your trip.
  • If you have a flexible ticket, consider catching an earlier or later train for more options.

I am traveling in September on a Friday morning, leaving at 11am. The Interlaken West station is much closer to my hotel than the Ost station. But I am concerned that if I take the train at the West station my wife and I might have difficulty finding seats next to each other, because the train already loaded a bunch of passengers at the Ost station. Am I over concerned?

    Hi Pascal

There are frequent trains from Interlaken Ost to Bern and so there should not be a problem as long as you don’t have a restrictive ticket ie Supersaver Ticket you can catch an earlier or later train.

I have attached a screenshot of today’s trains. You can see in advance the trains that are going to be crowded ie the 11.30 train is indicating 3 red passengers (busy) whereas the 11.00 train is going to have less passengers as it is only showing 1 passenger in black. If you check the route the 11.30 train is not crowded until it stops at Spiez. There is no problem between Interlaken Ost and Spiez and you would already be seated by then.

    Hope this is of help.

    Kind regards

    Jane

Hi there pascat, thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

I agree with Jane. You don’t have to be concerned about this. A mid-morning train ride on a Friday in September shouldn’t be that busy and boarding in Interlaken West will be fine. You can check the train’s expected occupancy for your date and departure time in the Swiss timetable, as explained by Jane. The paragraph “Expected occupancy of trains” at http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable provides details.
