Interlaken for 4 days – do I need rail pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is excited about their first trip to Switzerland in the first week of October, landing in Zurich and staying in Interlaken for 4 days with their young kids. They are seeking advice on whether they need a rail pass for village visits and what activities are suitable for their little ones around Interlaken, as they plan to explore Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and possibly enjoy a lake ride on Brienz or Thun.

Key takeaways:

Check the Swiss Travel Pass options to save money on public transport for your family. Children under 6 travel for free, so you won't need tickets for your little ones. Plan your trips carefully to compare ticket prices with rail pass options for the best value. Look for family-friendly activities in the Jungfrau region that are suitable for young kids.

    Hi
We are traveling to Switzerland for the first time. I am travelling October 1st week this year with young kids (6month and 4 years) . I am going to land in Zurich and staying at Interlaken for 4 days. I was wondering if we need any kind of railpass to visit village around?

Also what could be done with 2 young kids around Interlaken? Can’t go up 2000m with little one. I was planning lauterbrunnen, wengen , may be a lake ride brienz/Thun. What else to do there?

    Thanks

Hi Nc and welcome to MySwissAlps!

To know which rail pass is the best for your specific itinerary, you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (including which routes/mountains are free or discounted).

Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂 http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass

That being said, there are 3 rail passes to look at for 4 days in Interlaken. Read more about them, and what they offer below (note your children do not need tickets or rail passes as all children under 5 travel free):

As for what to do around Interlaken, and the Jungfrau region in general, look here for our suggestions: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion/activitie s
