Interlaken Ost to Milan with Swiss travel pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Pottsie is planning a trip from Interlaken OST to Milan with their family of five and is uncertain about using a 3-day Swiss Travel Pass for this journey. They need clarity on whether they can use the pass for the Swiss segment of their trip and how to manage the Italian leg of the journey.

Key takeaways:
  • You can use your Swiss Travel Pass for the Swiss portion, but you will need a separate ticket for the Italian leg from Domodossola to Milan.
  • When purchasing tickets on the SBB site, the GA number is not meant for travelers using the Swiss Travel Pass, so it won’t be accepted.
  • It's usually cheaper to buy international tickets in advance rather than at the station before departure.

I can’t figure out if I pre-purchase a 3 day Swiss Travel Pass, how best to travel from Interlaken OST to Milan. If I try to purchase this route on Sbb, can I include my pass as a GA discount so I don’t pay for the part of the leg that is in Switzerland? Or is the GA discount just for those with the annual GA card and that is something different?? I understand from other threads that I can also ride to the last Swiss station (Chiasso I think) and purchase a ticket from Trenitalia from there to Milan. I have a family of 5 and wouldn’t mind spending a little more to have seat reservations and not be on a regional train in Italy with luggage and no seat guarantees coming into Milan at evening rush hour. Really appreciate some help, my head is still spinning from all the calculations that the 3 day Swiss Travel Pass best met my needs.

Hi Pottsie, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Either way, there is no need to get off the train at the border station, which is Domodossola in your case. It’s just a matter of making sure you have a ticket for the Italian leg, as the Swiss leg is already covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

You can buy tickets from Domodossola to Milan from the websites listed here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy/price. Or you can indeed pick GA on the SBB site when purchasing a ticket for the entire trip. GA is not the same as a Swiss Travel Pass, but in this case it will give you the same discount.

Thanks so much Arno. Do you know if the Sbb site will accept a number from my Swiss Travel Pass (haven’t purchased it yet, so don’t know what it looks like) in the spot they ask for the GA number when purchasing the ticket? Maybe it won’t work if the site is really meant for Swiss citizens and not tourists? Also, is there any disadvantage to just buying the pass and the extra leg at the Zurich train station (plane arrives at 8:00am on a Saturday in September, so I assume they’ll be open)?

    Hi Pottsie,

The GA card is for residents and the SBB site is geared to them and not tourists so there is no spot to enter and Swiss Travel Pass #.

It is easiest to buy your Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price and then buy the ticket from Domodossola to Milan here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy

You can also buy that ticket upon arrival in Switzerland, but chances are that it will be more expensive (international tickets rise in price the closer to travel).

Thanks Arno – I took your advise and did it that way. By the way, for anyone using Happyrails – I was a little nervous to use a third party. I booked the passes with them, but didn’t get an email with my “e pass” as everyone else said was pretty prompt. After waiting 24 hours, I contacted them through their site and received a prompt reply with copies of all tickets. So one little glitch, but prompt customer service.
