Planning Trip from Interlaken to Grindelwald (February) – Need Clarification on Stations and Route

    Hi everyone!

We’re planning a trip to Switzerland in February, and we want to leave Interlaken as early as possible, aiming to catch the first train from Interlaken to Grindelwald. I have a few questions about the route and the different stations in Grindelwald, as well as some specifics about the Jungfrau Region with the Eurail Pass.

    1. Stations in Grindelwald: We plan to book tickets separately from Interlaken to Grindelwald, and then from Grindelwald Terminal to Jungfraujoch via the Eiger Express. With the Eurail Pass, I understand the train from Interlaken to Grindelwald should be free, and we’ll get a 25% discount from Grindelwald Terminal to Jungfraujoch via the Eiger Express. Could someone clarify:

Which station should we get off at if we’re aiming for the Eiger Express? Is it the main Grindelwald station or Grindelwald Terminal?

Are Grindelwald and Grindelwald Terminal two separate stations?

    2. Distance Between Grindelwald Stations: If we arrive at the main Grindelwald station (in the village) but need to go to Grindelwald Terminal, how far apart are they? What’s the best way to transfer between these stations?

    3. Understanding Grindelwald First: I’ve come across references to Grindelwald First, and it’s a bit confusing. Is Grindelwald First a separate station, or is it the name of an attraction? If it’s an attraction, how do we reach it from Grindelwald or Grindelwald Terminal?

    4. Is Grindelwald First Worth Visiting? Since we’re planning to go to Jungfraujoch, is it worth visiting Grindelwald First as well? I’d love to know if it’s a unique experience compared to Jungfraujoch or if it would be similar.

    5. How much time should we realistically plan to spend at Jungfraujoch to cover the main highlights without feeling rushed?

    6. If we’re aiming to keep our visit short, what’s the minimum amount of time recommended for exploring the top attractions?

    Apologies for the long post.

Thank you in advance for your help! I’d really appreciate any insights, as we’re trying to make the most of our time and avoid any confusion on arrival.

    Hi Use (again)!

Before you read what I have got to say, watch the MySwissAlps Youtube video: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/#video

    ‘Comparing the 3 Jungfraujoch routes’

    Grindelwald and Grindelwald Terminal.

As you will have gathered from the video, these are two separate stations. They are a bit over a mile (2 kms.) apart.  ‘Grindelwald’ is an old station in the centre of the village; ‘Grindelwald Terminal’ is a modern station built recently on the way into Grindelwald from Interlaken.  To get between the stations use the train for one stop!  Trains are every 30 minutes.

    Getting to Jungfraujoch (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/#directions)

I entirely support your idea of starting as early as possible.  As explained in the video, for the Eiger Express you get off at Grindelwald Terminal.  (Going up you will be taking ‘route 3’. I will come back later to going down).

As to time spent at Jungfraujoch, I would suggest a minimum of two hours, a maximum of three.

    Gridelwald First (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/)

The ‘First’ is a large plateau-type area high above Grindelwald village.  It is reached by a very long cable car journey (about 25 minutes) from Grindelwald village.  The area is very popular with hikers and mountain-bikers in Summer.  In winter it will be thronged by skiers and the like.  But pedestrians are still welcome.

The bottom station for the cable car is just off the main street of Grindelwald, about 8-10 minutes walk from the ‘old’ Grindelwald station in the centre of the village.

You could do Jungfraujoch in the morning and First in the afternoon.  Coming down from Jungfraujoch use the video’s route 2.  This means going down to Kleine Scheidegg, and from Kleine Scheidegg taking the green-and-yellow WAB train all the way to Grindelwald.   Do NOT get off at Grindelwald Grund.  (Grund is at the very bottom of the valley.  From Grund the WAB train goes UPhill to the old station in the centre of the village.)

    Best wishes

    Roger

    Hi Use,

There is a direct train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald Terminal (it’s one stop before Grindelwald). With the Eurail Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/eurail-global-pass/), the train journey from Interlaken to Grindelwald Terminal is free – there is no need to purchase any ticket. From Grindelwald Terminal to Jungfaujoch via the Eiger Express, you get a discount of 25%. You can purchase the ticket directly from the ticket counter.

Please use the SBB timetable to check train schedules: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

    Regards,

    Anna
