Interlaken to Milan by train – transfer time, seat reservation

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Ten, is planning a trip from Interlaken to Milan and has a Swiss Travel Pass. They want to know if they need to reserve a seat on the train from Interlaken West to Spiez and if 15 minutes is enough time for their transfer between these two trains.

Key takeaways:
  • You don't need to reserve a seat from Interlaken West to Spiez.
  • Fifteen minutes is more than enough time to transfer at Spiez as platforms 2 and 3 are very close.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, all travel within Switzerland is covered; you only need a ticket for the journey from Domodossola to Milan.

Hi! I have a swiss travel pass and I already bought a ticket for the train from Spiez to Milan Central. The following are my questions:

    1. Do I have to reserve a seat on the train from Interlaken West to Spiez? I have a swiss travel pass already.

    2. How much time should I allot for the transfer of trains? The one I saw online was, I have a transfer time of around 15 minutes to get from Platform 2 (where my train from Interlaken to Spiez will stop) to Platform 3 (where my train from Spiez to Milan) will be. Is 15 minutes enough time for change or should I allot more time?

Hi Ten, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

No, you don’t have to reserve a seat on the train from Interlaken West to Spiez.

Fifteen minutes transfer time at Spiez will be more than you need. The standard transfer time at Spiez is 4 minutes. Platforms 2 and 3 are two sides of the same platform. You can see a plan of Spiez station here:

    Hope this helps!

    Hello Ten,

In addition to Alpenrose’s helpful reply, short connection times are also explained in the below link, scroll to  “How to deal with short train transfer times”:

Also, as you will have the Swiss Travel Pass, note you would only need to purchase a ticket from the Swiss border to Milan, all travel within Switzerland is covered with your pass. You can download and view the coverage map here:

For your route via Spiez, a ticket from Domodossola to Milan is all you would need.  More information on travel to /from Italy in the attached link:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
