Is public transport in Switzerland available 24/7?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a family trip to Switzerland from early December, spending two nights each in Luzern, Grindelwald, and Zermatt. They are concerned about the limited hours of public transport, specifically wondering if they can catch trains at late hours like 10 PM or midnight, and are considering accommodation options based on this information.

Key takeaways:
  • Public transport generally does not operate between midnight and 5:00 AM, so plan accordingly.
  • Check the schedule for specific routes on the official timetable website for precise information.
  • If you're looking to save on accommodation, ensure that it's within reasonable distance from train stations for easy access.

Hi! My family and I will be visiting Switzerland from the 1st of Dec 2018 till the 7th of Dec > spending 2 nights each in Luzern, Grindelwald and Zermatt. Since we’ll be doing a lot of moving around we’ve decided to get the Swiss Travel Pass. My main worry now is that public transport will stop running for certain hours… Will it? Or will we able to board a train at say, 10pm or midnight too? This matters since I’m thinking of booking accommodation slightly further out (but still close by train stations) since it’s cheaper but if we have to cut short our visit into the city/other places then it makes more sense to just stay in main areas. Thanks in advance!
