Hi Jim & Cheryl and welcome to MySwissAlps!

You’ll find useful information about traveling to Germany from Switzerland at http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/germany.

Although it is a minimum 7 hours train route, I am afraid you won’t find any sleeper trains to München from Montreux. What you can do is to travel first to Zürich spend the night there and then travel further to München. München is only 4 hours away from Zürich.

You can search the timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

Cheap airfare has hurt the sleeper train business. But train travel is environmentally friendly, and they may make a comeback in the future. München (Munich) is too close to Switzerland to have a sleeping car overnight train. There is a new faster daytime service from Zurich starting in December 2020.

You are doing your trip the wrong way round.

If you need to finish your trip in Munich you need to visit western Switzerland (Zermatt) from Milano first, then go back East, as it is much easier to get to Munich from Chur/Zurich

Instead from Montreux, take the train from Zurich in the evening and it takes 4 hours to reach Munich and no necessity of change of trains is involved. Most of other trains reaching Munich in the morning from Geneva involves no. of train change.

In the new timetable for 2021, Montreux – München will take at around 6 hours 50 minutes with two or three changes.

Reservations for Zürich – München trains will be recommended but not obligatory
