When, where to buy regular tickets, rail passes for our Swiss trip?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named brugert is planning a trip to Switzerland for 6 days with a group of 4 adults, including a stay in Mürren. They want to know the best ways to buy tickets for their travels, especially regarding the Jungfrau pass and point-to-point tickets, while ensuring flexibility due to potential flight delays.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy point-to-point tickets from Zurich to Mürren in advance to allow flexibility with flight delays.
  • Purchase the Jungfrau 3-day pass in person in Mürren for the discount using your Swiss Half Fare Card.
  • For your journey from Lucerne to Lindau-Reutin, ensure that your SBB ticket covers the entire route; you may need a separate ticket for the German segment if not included.

After much research, I have decided it makes most sense with our plans and our group of 4 adults to purchase a 3-day Jungfrau pass and Half Fare Card. We arrive US – Zurich on 9/4/25. I have questions on when/where to buy tickets for the 6 days we are in Switzerland (includes 2 travel days). I will purchase the Half Fare card online in advance and then just hoping to get clarification on these other purchases:

9/4/25 Take the fastest route from Zurich airport to Murren (4-night stay) – Buy a point to point ticket (not supersaver) on SBB in advance and if we have any issues with flight delays, our ticket will be good on any train from Zurich to Murren? Even if flight is delayed an entire day?

9/5,9/6,9/7 – use the Jungrau 3-day pass for all our planned walks/hikes – purchase this in person? because on the Jungfrau site I don’t see where you can enter a half fare card discount to get the discounted price? If so, where in person in Murren can the Jungfrau pass be bought?

9/8/25 – Take train from Murren to Lucerne – Buy a saver day pass if it’s 29ch 6-months out (since the point to point cost is about the same price). Then we could use the saver day pass in Lucerne for a boat ride too. If the saver day pass is more than 29ch, then buy a point to point pass or a supersaver ticket since we know for sure the day and time we want to go from Murren to Lucerne. Either way, buy online in advance.

9/9/25 – Take train from Lucerne to Lindau-Reutin (where we have a car reserved to drive in Germany and Austria) – use SBB site to buy a point to point ticket. Can I get the half price fare for this too even though we are ending in a German city? Or should I use the int.bahn.de site? I tried picking tickets on the German site for even 1 week out and it wasn’t allowing me to book tickets or see a price so I liked the idea of just booking online in advance on SBB for this too.

I hope that makes sense (what I am asking). I just want reassurance that what I think I need/want to do is correct and I know where to go to get things bought. Planned to use the swissrailways.com site for half fare cards and SBB for regular tickets. This has been crazy to sift through all the info, picking our activities, knowing the weather could also be a factor, but also just logistically getting everything bought! I appreciate your help!! Thx 🙂

    Hi brugert,

Yes, it can be quite overwhelming when researching for trips.  You are on track 🙂

    In answer to your questions:

    1.  Correct if you buy regular point-to-point tickets, there are no restrictions.  You can travel all day on your date of travel.  All explained here in the attached link and a guide to purchasing such tickets:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/point-to-point/

    2.  You can find some online trusted options for your Jungfrau Travel Pass in below.  A 25% discount will be applied with your Swiss Half Fare Card.  With the Jungfrau Travel Pass, there is no need to purchase additional tickets whilst in the coverage area, unless you are traveling to Jungfraujoch and few other locations.  I suggest you read through our guide and all should be a lot clearer afterwards.

    3.  Yes, this makes sense. If the Saver Day Pass is the cheaper option, go ahead as it will allow your boat travel too.  Once your date is locked in, the earlier you buy, the cheaper it is.  You can purchase up to 6 months in advance.  Purchase options can also be found here:

    4.  Your ticket to Lindau.  The Swiss Half Fare Card discount will only apply to the Swiss border before entering Germany.  Thereon, you will need a ticket for the German section.  Depending which train route you take, likely to be Buchs or St. Gallen.

All about travel to/from Germany is explained here, you can also find some options to buy your German ticket too:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/germany-switzerland/

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

Thank you Yolanda! I see now where I can buy the Jungfrau pass with my half fare discount on the swissrailways.com website. I will also use that site to purchase the half fare card and any saver day pass we might buy. I will use the SBB website to purchase our tickets from Zurich to Murren on our arrival day (making sure not to get the supersaver tickets in case of delays with our flight). My only confusion still is getting my ticket from Lucerne to Lindau-Reutin. When I go through the process of putting those 2 cities on the SBB website, it lets me choose that we have the half fare card and shows that our tickets are good from Lucerne to Lindau-Reutin. Supersaver fare is 29ch/person. Isn’t that all I would need to do? Or are you saying even thought I put Lindau-Reutin in as my destination, I still need to go to the German train website and purchase another separate ticket from the border town St Margrethen to Lindau-Reutin? (That actually takes us into Austria for a bit too). Or is the one ticket I purchase on SBB from Luzerne to Lindau-Reutin all I need? Appreciate your help!

    Hi brugert,

Typically yes but there are also journeys you can also book the entire trip which it appears with the journey you have found allows you to do so.

What you should see is a break down of the entire trip when you progress with the ‘purchase’.   Lucerne to St. Margrethen, then St. Margrethen to Lindau-Reutin, with pricing detailed for both legs, which in your example would amount to CHF29?

Note, Supersaver fares are time and date specific. Should you miss the departure, you would need to buy another ticket, all explained here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/supersaver-ticket/.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

Ok, thank you!  I think that particular ticket looked like it went to my final destination. I will make sure when it gets closer and I can actually book the tickets. 🙂 Cindy
