5d Jungfrau trip based Grindelwald: itinerary feedback and ideas

Short summary – read this first

A family of four, with kids aged 14 and 17, is planning a 5-night stay in Grindelwald from June 29 to July 4. They want suggestions for a flexible itinerary that balances activities and travel time, including visits to places like the Jungfraujoch and Lauterbrunnen while considering transportation passes.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider the Half Fare Card and explore the Berner Oberland Pass for flexibility and discounts on various attractions.
  • Try to keep Day 1 and Day 2 activities manageable; are they too packed to combine?
  • For Day 4, focus on Lauterbrunnen and nearby towns like Mürren and Wengen to maximize your experience.

My family of 4 (two kids, 14 and 17)will be staying in Grindelwald as a home base for 5 nights from June 29-July 4. I have a vey loose itinerary that I am trying to shape and would like any suggestions that you might have on things we should/shouldn’t do either for time or ease of travel reasons. I would like to fit in as much as possible, but also do not want to overextend ourselves, making sure we have the amount of travel time we need for the day. I’m not locking in to any particular date for these itinerary days but will try to plan which day we do what based on the weather whenever possible. Due to travel to and from the region we will have 4 full days of exploring. We will have the Half Fare card and I am weighing the possibility of having the Jungfrau Travel Pass as well.

Day 1: Explore Grindelwald First (maybe 1 adventure activity if lines aren’t too long and cliff walk), Hike Bachalpsee, Glacier Canyon
Day 2: Jungfraujoc (not sure if we should try to fit anything else in this day? Could day 1 and 2 be combined?)
Day 3: Day trip to Interlaken, Lake Brienz and Lucerne. Thinking of incorporating Interlaken-Lucerne Express for this journey. Would also like to check out Giessbach Falls within this journey if possible)
Day 4: Definitely want to explore Lauterbrunnen but am open to ideas about best areas to explore in this leg of the trip – There’s too much to fit in, but would love ideas on best towns/routes to explore from Grindelwald to this area. Murren, Wengen, Mannlichen, North face trail?? What do you think would be reasonable for this day?

Any other suggestions are more than welcome! Thank you for helping me to shape this journey!

    Hello again Karilynne

I am going to concentrate on the public transport passes issue..

I have looked at your previous threads.  It is clear that you have rejected the Swiss Travel Pass.  It seems that you are now opting for the Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/), plus Super Saver Tickets (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/supersaver-ticket/), plus (perhaps) the Jungfrau Travel Pass.

Having rejected the Swiss Travel Pass, you do now need to consider the Berner Oberland Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/).  The BOP covers a very much wider area than the Jungfrau Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/jungfrau-travel-pass/).  In particular it will take you to destinations as far away as Lucerne, Bern, and Brig and Domodossola via Kandersteg. It will take you FREE up Mannlichen, Schilthorn and Pffingsteg and many other mountains, eg the Brienzer Rothorn steam train.

However FIRST and (of course) Jungfraujoch are only discounted fares with the BOP  Never mind!  Invest in BOPs (30% discount for the 17-year old) and concentrate all your travels on those lines and routes which are FREE with the BOP.

If you reject this advice and opt for the JTP, concentrate all your travels on those lines which are FREE with the JTP.  First, Schynige Platte, Harder, Murren via Grutschalp (there are others).  (The JTP will get you to Brienz, not does not cover the 58 kilometres, 36 miles, on to Lucerne.)

    Kind Regards
    Roger

    Thank you Roger.
Yes, my trip has changed a bit since my original post on questions about the passes. We are no longer staying as long and we won’t be staying in Lucerne. I’m definitely not opposed to any of the pass options, but we were leaning toward the 1/2 fare card over the STP. The discounted price for Jungfraujoc piqued my interest with the JTP, which is why I was considering it. I think I was looking to make decisions about which locations we were definitely going to include and then I was going to look more specifically at routes and which passes made the most sense. It felt a little easier to narrow down where we were going and then go back and look at the financial piece and what passes end up making the most sense for us. But I see how you are looking at it as well.
