Jungfrau Region w/Swiss Travel Pass: routes?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named BB is currently in Switzerland and enjoying the trip despite some weather challenges. They are planning to explore Grindelwald, Wengen, and Lauterbrunnen tomorrow, seeking advice on the best travel route among these places and whether to purchase tickets in advance or on-site. They also want to know if the Swiss Travel Pass covers these routes and how to navigate the transport options between the towns.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers travel between Grindelwald, Wengen, and Lauterbrunnen, but mountain transport may require additional tickets.
  • It's best to buy tickets upon arrival in the towns if you have the Swiss Travel Pass, check a coverage map for details.
  • Consider taking the route from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen, and then visit Wengen and Mürren together for an efficient trip.

Greetings all! We have arrived in Switzerland and have been having a fabulous time so far. While the weather doesn’t look to be flawless, we plan to head up into the mountains tomorrow and I have a few questions. Looking at a previous rockoyster report, we like the look of going to Grindelwald, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen.

We could get to Grindelwald by 1000-1030 (IC and R trains) – those are both covered by STP, but please correct me if I’m wrong.

The SBB app seems to only show travel to the other towns via Int. Ost. I believe there are other means of transport between these 3 towns, can you please advise on:

1 – What is best route to visit these places? Grindelwald to Wengen then to Lauterbrunnen (then back home base via Int Ost)?

2 – For transport between these towns, I think the STP might provide a discount…can we buy the tickets in the towns or would it be best to buy ahead of time?

We are open to walking distances (not hard hikes but easy walks of distance), however we don’t have heavy rain gear so that it might be best to stick with transport via train, gondola, etc.

Apologies for requesting itinerary advice but we’d greatly appreciate some quick advice/info for this excursion. If the weather is particularly bad while there tomorrow, we might do the same trip again (or slight variation) the following day and see if our luck improves. Tomorrow/Friday will be our only chances to visit this region during this trip.

    Thanks much!

    BB

    Hello BB,

Happy to hear you are having fun so far!

Attached is the Swiss Travel Pass coverage map. Download and you will be able to see what is completely included or if you need to purchase a discounted ticket.

Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are on “opposite sides” of the valley so, you’d probably want to visit for example Mürren and Wengen “together” via Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken Ost. Going to Grindelwald from Interlaken would be a different train in another direction.

Your travel for the above mentioned places are covered with the Swiss Travel Pass. If you look on the map, it’s only when you take mountain transport in the area (the dotted lines) you’d need to buy a ticket.

Some hiking suggestions in the area (0f varying degrees of difficulty) can be found here, scroll to “Regional Hiking Suggestions”:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi BouncyBall,

One thing may help you. Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg, and Grindelwald are all only accessable from Interlaken Ost. (You will first go through Wilderswill and Zweilutschinen.) Hope this may help you decipher things.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Hello Yolanda and Danielsan.

We had an absolutely magnificent trip to Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald yesterday…thank you both for your quick help! The weather was perfect and we were able to arrive in Lauterbrunnen just before the sun broke over the mountains and beautifully lit up the valley. It challenging to put into words the beauty of that region. 🙂

    Best regards,

    BB

    Hi BouncyBall,

Glad to hear all worked well for you. I’ve arrived up there myself right now, leaving a rough-weather outing in cloudy Zermatt behind. Checked in and am here for 4 nights.Hoping the weather will be better here. Enjoy rest of your trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan
