Is the Jungfrau Travel Pass cost effective for a few days in Wengen?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named KRK is planning a summer trip to Switzerland, spending a few days in Wengen and then heading to Zermatt. They are looking for cost-effective public transportation options and questioning the value of the Jungfrau regional pass compared to the Swiss Half Fare Card.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider the Jungfrau Travel Pass if you plan to make multiple mountain trips from Wengen, as it offers unlimited travel to major destinations.
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card provides a 50% discount on tickets, but combining it with the Jungfrau Travel Pass can lead to significant savings depending on your itinerary.
  • Use the SBB app to compare rail pass savings with regular tickets by switching to full fare prices in the timetable.
  • Remember that you can only use one discount at a time; the Jungfrau Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card cannot be combined for additional savings.

    Hi,
I am planning to be in Switzerland this summer – spending a few days in Wengen and then going to Zermatt. I am trying to figure out the most cost effective way to utilize Swiss public transportation. I have been using the SBB app/website but the only discount options they show are Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half fare. I was planning to also get the Jungfrau regional pass for the days I am in Wengen, but from what I can tell, it isn’t actually worth the money. Am I missing something? Is there a better app/transportation planner to use?

    Thank you

    Hi KRK, welcome to MySwissAlps!

In general, using a rail pass is much cheaper than buying regular tickets.  Assuming you’ll be making mountain trips from Wengen, a Jungfrau Travel Pass or Berner Oberland Pass is likely worth the investment. All details, including coverage:

Both can be combined with a Swiss Half Fare Card. This provides a discount on both of these regional passes, as well as discounts on other tickets, e.g. to Zermatt: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/

Which option is most economical, depends on the details of your itinerary. Here’s how to find out what works best for your plans:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/jungfrau-travel-pass/
Please be aware that the Swiss timetable displays 50% discounted prices by default. If you want to compare rail pass savings with regular tickets, it’s crucial to switch to normal full fares. Otherwise, you may mistakenly think that a rail pass isn’t much cheaper than normal tickets. The website I linked to explains this step by step.

The Swiss timetable only shows discounted fares for rail subscriptions commonly used by Swiss residents. Most of them have a “Halbtax” (Half-Fare) subscription. More details are in our timetable guide: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

Thank you for your thorough response.
I had actually already read those posts of yours before asking my question. I did map out a lot of the routes I would be taking and the 165 cost of the jungfrau pass (assuming used in conjunction with the Swiss half fare card) doesn’t seem to save me anywhere close to 165 so I am wondering what I am missing or if I am correct in assuming it is better to just do the Swiss half fare card.

these are the trips that I am planning to take in the Jungfrau area. I am only planning to be there about 3 days (arriving the 1st of those from Zurich)
Wengen -> Mannlichen -> Kleine Scheidegg
    Wengen -> Maanlichen-> Grindelwald-> Firstbahn (to Bachalpsee)
and then Wengen-> Murren and the schilthornbahn and lauterbrunnen and maybe harder Kulm if have time

    Hi KRK,

With the Jungfrau Travel Pass, you can enjoy unlimited free travel between Wengen, Männlichen, Grindelwald, Grindelwald First, Mürren, and Schilthorn. The convenience of not having to purchase individual tickets for each journey makes it a worthwhile option.

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is also valid on boat trips on Lake Brienz (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-brienz/). I’d definitely recommend going on a quick cruise.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hi KRK!

Thanks for clarifying; I had missed that you were planning to use a Swiss Half Fare Card for sure.  As Anna mentioned, an additional Jungfrau Travel Pass for free travel to the mountain tops can be worth it.

Just an example: a single trip Wengen-Männlichen-Grindelwald First would cost CHF 52 with a Swiss Half Fare Card, and a return ride from Grindelwald-First to Wengen via Zweilütschinen in the valley would cost CHF 28.80. All of this would be free with a Jungfrau Travel Pass.

But: if you ran complete calculations based on all of the trips you plan to make, and the Jungfrau Travel Pass doesn’t appear to save you any money, you have a clear answer.

    I hope this helps!

Thank you so much. Just one more thing if you could please clarify. I am rather confused by what the price is from Wengen to Schilthorn with different passes. I read this post of yours (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/) but I am still very unclear. Are you able to break this route down for me please?

    Hi KRK,

A return ride Wengen-Mürren via Grütschalp is CHF 38 (full fare).

A return ride Mürren-Schilthorn costs CHF 91.40 (full fare).

The Swiss Half Fare Card provides a 50% discount on all sections. The Jungfrau Travel Pass grants free travel to Mürren (only via Grütschalp, not via Stechelberg) and a 25% discount on Mürren-Schiltorn.

All details are in the Schilthorn price section (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/#price) and rail pass discount section (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/#discounts).

You can also study the overview of mountain rides covered by the Jungfrau Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/details/jungfrau-travel-pass-validity/#benefits-on-mountain-excursions-with-the-jungfrau-travel-pass).

Our timetable guide explains how to find normal full fares for your calculations: see “How to find realistic prices in the timetable” at https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/.

    Does this help you out?

Thank you – if using Swiss Half Fare and Jungfrau travel passes does that give extra 25% off of already discounted fare from Swiss Half fare? So Murren -> Schilthorn is 91.4/2 = 45.7 and then * .25 is 22.85?

    Hello KRK

No You cannot claim two discounts

If you are buying  a ticket in Switzerland and have TWO passes entitling you to a discount, you can NOT claim two discounts.  It follows that for the Murren to Schilthorn leg of your trip from Wengen to Schilthorn, the return fare will be 45.70 CHF.

From Lauterbrunnen to Murren go via Grutschalp

This route is FREE with the Jungfrau Travel Pass, so use this route to get to and from Murren.

(The alternative route going by bus to Stechelberg and then on the cable up to Murren is NOT included within the Jungfrau Travel Pass.  You would, however, get a 50% discount on this route using your Half Fare Card.)

    Kind regards

    Roger
